Just got a '65 swb

Hey guys, newbie here. I just got myself a '65 swb. Runs nice

My to-do list:

swap out the bumpers/grill for chrome
disc brake conversion
air bag suspension
white wall tires (still debating on this)

I also want to fix the paint job. It's flat black in the rear bed, but a slightly more glossy on the cab and hood. I want to go full flat black.

Thanks!

Tomorrow I need to go to Jiffy Lube...LOL don't laugh. I was changing the oil for the first time on this truck today and I realized the previous owner had the oil filter screwed in very very tight. I tried using a strap wrench to get it out but it only ended up denting the filter...the thing wont budge

I am hoping the guys at Jiffy Lube can get it off

Re: Just got a '65 swb

as for the oil filter take a big screw driver drive it through the side of the filter at the bottom and then spin it off .....the chrome (where is the other bumper bolt?) looks very good off setting with the black white walls should do like wise ... myself i think the satin black looks better than the flat

That looks great

the grill and bumper go well with the chrome wheels, and a nice balance with the black.

Re: Just got a '65 swb

The screwdriver trick will work on the filter. I used to work in a lube shop in my youth and saw a lot of stuff people did wrong. Quick lube places get a bad name but I never ripped anyone off or cut corners when I did that for a living. I once had a filter stuck so bad I had to strip it down all the way to the base and use a chisel on the ring to get it off. I think the only over priced thing they do is changing the gear box oil. Especially on something like a 4x4 Toyota. They have drainplugs on the boxes and it takes less than 10 minutes to drain and refill them. Also the Honda manual trans. They have drainplugs and take regular motor oil in the trans. 5 minutes of work and 7 bucks worth of oil for 40 bucks. Not to shabby. Woops kinda off topic.

Re: Just got a '65 swb

Thanks guys.

Regarding my oil filter problem....I will try the screwdriver technique tomorrow. But what if it just tears off the casing and the oil filter is still stuck in the threads?? Then I am in a world of hurt because I won't be able to drive the truck to the shop.

Re: Just got a '65 swb

If it tears off just keep tearing at it with vice grips until you can get to the ring that is around the opening. Tap on it with a chisel making sure not to get into the base on the engine block. The part you will be tapping on is thicker than the filter and it will come off with some "help".

Re: Just got a '65 swb

hey, guys. I haven't done much to my truck since I bought it. Thinking about cutting a coil off the front springs and a 1 inch block on the rear. The truck came with lowering springs, but I don;t know how much lower. the PO died so I cant ask him.

Re: Just got a '65 swb

Can anyone estimate the amount of drop I have on my truck? The previous owner installed drop spring all around. Otherwise everything else is stock. But I cant tell how much he lowered it, and he's dead now so I cant ask him anymore

I want to get a 4 inch drop spring on the front, but I dunno it already has a 4 inch drop?
