65 stepside dd build

I've had this truck for several years and finally got a notion to drag it out of the weeds and put it to use. Thanks to many of you on here I have great direction for my build. I have 3" front springs 2-1/2" spindles 5" rear springs and 2" blocks coming. Keeping it 6lug with CPP rotors from Summit. And possibly sectioning the cross member and using a power rack being I will add air bags with a York210 engine driven compressor when I settle on a permanent power plant. No need to build all the brackets and plumb everything twice IMO

Re: 65 stepside dd build

Currently has a V8 of the 60's period not sure of displacement but from what little I've had it running I may be swapping in another smallblock being it puffs some smoke pretty well.

Re: 65 stepside dd build

I decided to make my own c notch reinforcement brackets but I shall warn anyone whom wishes to do the same this can be time consuming being these frames are nowhere near a straight line in the rear axle area unlike many later model leaf sprung pickups. I made patterns for all four sides traced onto 3/16 steel plate and cut with a band saw rather than a torch or plasma to minimize grinding. It is taking nearly every c-clamp I have to squeeze and hammer them to conform to the frame contour and begin tacking to each other to maintain the desired shape. Just as I began making good headway I ran out of wire. So I will post again when I can get back at it and show some completion.

Re: 65 stepside dd build

So I finished up the notches utilizing all existing holes in the frame and welding in place I will use grade 8 hardware after painting to reassemble crossmember and spring pads

Re: 65 stepside dd build

Been a while since I've done much with the truck due to other home projects and a differential dilemma. I have a 5.3 and 4l60E awaiting in the shed and finally broke down and bought new guts for the rearend. Around here in the Midwest apparently any rearend that hasn't been in use for a good 10 years is most likely rusted beyond reliable use. Been working on crossmember mods and tank mounts for the efi ready poly tank I got from tanks inc. It's for a 49-51 Ford car. I didn't want it to hang below the frame much but wanted to keep as much capacity as I could. It's a 17 gallon unit. I cut a piece of rectangle tube to replace the rearmost crossmember and made it bolt in using one bumper mount hole the bed mount hole and another hole on bottom side of frame.I also moved the crossmember just behind axle 1" forward on pass side to help clearance for tank.

Re: 65 stepside dd build

Although much deeper in the pocketbook and labor wise I now have a rearend good for at least 100k miles.

Along for the ride. Always good to have a dependable rear end.
