Grounding gas tank filler neck
Where do I run the ground from my gas tank filler neck? Frame? Bed? Gas tank? I have a 79 stepside

Re: Grounding gas tank filler neck
I have only seen the ground attached to the bed. I did not know that the 79 had a ground strap.

Re: Grounding gas tank filler neck
The filler neck on my stepside is metal, it is screwed to the fender, fender is bolted to the bed, and there is a ground strap from the frame, to the bed. Same with my fleet side, no separate ground just for the filler neck on mine.

Re: Grounding gas tank filler neck
I put an 85 bed on mine and it has a plastic piece the neck connects. So it is not grounded

Re: Grounding gas tank filler neck
As long as the filler neck is BONDED to a metal component on the truck and you can follow a chain of bonds between all metal components you should be able to bond the filler neck to what ever is your ground. Making every piece of metal on the truck one unit through bonding is not a bad idea. The Air Force does it to every plane for a reason not a great reason but the redundancy makes for a safer machine. And when dealing with fuel why not be safer?

Re: Grounding gas tank filler neck
OK, I wasn't sure if I should keep it to the bed alone, or get to the frame.
Thanks Chris

Re: Grounding gas tank filler neck
So, an 85 filler neck should have a ground strap attached via rivet to the filler neck ring. (When the ground strap snapped off, I have drilled out the rivet, countersunk the rivet hole, installed a very short countersunk flat head machine screw, and secured it with a toothed washer and nut.) The stock ground strap is not very long, so I would be surprised if it would reach all the way to the frame. I have always seen them attached toward the rear of the truck on a nearby sheet metal edge.

Re: Grounding gas tank filler neck
I have the neck screwed to the plastic piece with some bolts that go through the plastic and my neck has threads. I cleaned off the back and added an electrical connector I slid over the bolt and added a nut. I then went down to the frame and did the same had a self taping bolt I went into an existing hole in the frame after I cleaned the frame off. Thinking this should be good. Thanks
