I just installed a 4L80E in mine, nice transmission, decent shift manners. I have 4.56 rear gears now and the overdrive makes them like 3.23:1.
The 6L80E and later, if I understand them, have a controller built into their guts but then you need and engine controller that can coordinate and talk with them, so I have no idea how you set one up aftermarket. If you were using a modern GM controller for the engine, it might just work, but that's a big bet. I wouldn't go 6 unless you know authoritatively how you're going to control it.
