Choosing a Transmission

Hello fellow forum members, I had a very important question for you all. Which transmission should I choose to put in my daily driver '68 Chevy C10? A little background info about the truck powertrain, 2014 6.2L Silverado Aluminum block engine (with about 30 miles), and a positive diff with disk brakes (still don't know the gear ratio of the diff). I was thinking putting a 4L80E or a 4L60E auto trans. Or put a t56 (6 speed) manual transmission. If you all don't agree or have a better trans to go with the setup I am going with, then please tell me.

Do you have an engine controller? I don't know much about the new ones. I would consider a 6L80. It's probably what come behind your 6.2L

No I still don't have the engine controller, I just have the bare engine. I really do not have a clue what trans it came with but I am looking to up the power output by the end of 2017 early 2018. So I want a trans that will work with the current stock power level but that can also work into the higher horsepower if I decide to do that.

6L80 would be my choice.

I would definitely rule out a 4L60 anyhow as its not strong enough for a 6.2

With a 6L80 I believe you will need a high hump floor, and if I remember right the 6L80 is pretty spendy last I looked.

Hmmm, never actually thought of using that trans. I was just looking around for some more info about it and I came across that you have to program the transmission for whatever application you are going to use it for. Is that true?

Keep in mind that last time I checked there wasn't really any aftermarket EFI systems or standalone controllers to run the 6L80e. They can be built for plenty of power, but the general consensus is that they are extremely finnicky when it comes to tuning them to live.

The 4L80e is going to be one of the easiest and strongest options, and will work fine with the low hump tunnel. Lots of aftermarket, and the gear ratios will work out better unless you are building a peaky/high rpm combo.

I just installed a 4L80E in mine, nice transmission, decent shift manners. I have 4.56 rear gears now and the overdrive makes them like 3.23:1.

The 6L80E and later, if I understand them, have a controller built into their guts but then you need and engine controller that can coordinate and talk with them, so I have no idea how you set one up aftermarket.

If you were using a modern GM controller for the engine, it might just work, but that's a big bet. I wouldn't go 6 unless you know authoritatively how you're going to control it.
