So, for guys that have had big blocks, how is the cab drone and overall noise when your driving around? It always drove me crazy in a DD after a week of fun, when your sitting in traffic and you cant hear yourself think. could i make it decently quiet with the right muffler? (SORRY) Are the vibrations going to be much worse? and as far as fuel, is it going to be much worse than a 350/ th350 setup?
please let me know your opinions, seems like i might have to act fast on this one.
Thanks!
why not a BBC?? are you towing or driving long distance. I've got a 56 with a 454 and a TH400, I didn't put that into it worrying about gas mileage. as far as vibration and noise, you've heard from enough to tell you it's not an issue with the right exhaust. Please, don't run your pipes out the side, that's noisy for sure.

Re: Will Big Block be TOO MUCH?

I had a 250 with a TH400 and 3.73 gears in my 70 SWB and it got 13-14. Maybe 15 with a tail wind on the highway. It was my DD for 14 years in that configuration. Now it has a 402 and it gets 11. It has a mild cam and an Edelbrock 750 carb with HEI. Other than that, it's all stock. I did not buy the truck because I wanted something that would get good fuel mileage. I just love to drive it. It is loud right now, but it only has 2.5 inch pipes to Thrush turbo mufflers that are right under the front of the bed, and no tailpipes. It will be fine once I get a proper exhaust system on it. There is no replacement for displacement!

Re: Will Big Block be TOO MUCH?

to add to what so many have said, you don't need to spend the money on an OD, unless you plan on pulling serious RPM'S, I've got a street rod with a 454, TH 400, dual quads and a 2.78 (I believe) rear end gear and I'm getting 14+ on the highway. so it really depends upon your need, if gas mileage is an issue.
