Water pump replacement...what else?

I'm going to replace my water pump...it started sqeaking and I see a drizzle from the weep hole. Anything else I should consider checking and or replacing since I will have it apart? Lower radiator hose..yes. ...Upper is new....Radiator is new. Pulleys all new. Thermal fan clutch is new. Thermostat is new..180 deg. Heater hoses are new. Harmonic balancer is new.
It's original 307 and I don't know the mileage or how well it was maintained before I got it. Runs great, no smoke. Mild cam with roller tip rockers, fresh rebuilt stock heads.

Re: Water pump replacement...what else?

If you dig a little deeper you can do the timing chain!

Re: Water pump replacement...what else?

I did think of timing chain, but didn't want to say it out loud. I don't drive it that much, but when I do, I put my foot in it. (307 style) it would be my luck, I would finish the water pump then the timing chain would fail.
Can I get away with lowering the oil pan enough to r&r the timing chain cover without replacing a fairly new one piece oil pan gasket?

Don't automatically condemn the timing chain.

Remove your distributor cap and using a socket on the harmonic balancer, turn the engine forward and back to see how much rotation your can turn the crank before the distributor rotor will move. That gives you an idea of how much slack is in the timing chain and gears.

Re: Water pump replacement...what else?

When you pull off your old pump you can look in the water jacket openings to see how much crud build up there is and decide if you need to flush your system. I have heard good and bad about using vinegar to flush with. If you think you might need to flush the system you may want to do it before you take the old pump off that way you are not circulating crap through the new pump.

Thanks for the suggestion...I did a flush before I replaced my radiator last year.
