"Monte Carlo" is a district in the Principality of Monaco, near the south of France. The word is Italian in origin, and translates literally in Italian or French as "Mount Charles".

GM sure came up with some fancy names, and a lot of them from real places around the globe..

How Romanic It's all French to me...I mean Latin I'd like to learn more about the history of that region. I like how Pontiac,in the muscle era,used famous race names for their models...GTO,Bonneville,Grand Prix,LeMans,Trans Am,Firebird...wait,which came first,the drag strip or car? (The car)

I love the name Camaro. In french it means Friend or the comradeship of good friends...which it such has created in a strong following. But,there's another definition I like even better. It's a medical term that means: A disease contracted by horse,usually Mustangs,that results in death!

But,I never saw the connection in the names. Hmmm...Grand Prix,that's French,too!

The Pontiac Grand Prix and the Chevrolet Monte Carlo were corresponding cars, as in the race in Monaco and the casino in Monaco. Of coarse the Grand Prix significantly predated the Monte Carlo. The early Buick Riviera (63-65) is a platform unique to Buick, and then in 1966 you have the most unlikely of sister vehicles, the Buick Riviera and the Oldsmobile Toronado, which share windshields, wheelbase, body panel dimensions and lots of other dimensional data, but totally, totally different drivetrains and suspensions, the Buick is rear wheel drive 4 corner coils and the Olds is front wheel drive with torsion bars and mono leafs (with a planetary differential and a strange TH400 folded in half, oh and the 2nd highest HP engine GM offered in 66 behind the 427 'Vette, I've owned 2 of them). I always assumed the Riviera floor pan was the backup plan in the event the front wheel drive system went horribly wrong (Ralph Nader days you know). The El Dorado got a stretched version of the Toronado drive train a year later. Honestly I think the Toronado is one of the best looking cars GM did in the '60s, the drive train is actually pretty tedious to drive around town, but somewhere around 80, these cars just float, so smooth, and you better keep an eye on the speedometer (which rolls, the needle is stationary) because you'll drift well past 100 smoothly and effortlessly, like the car has taken over the driving.

So what does this all have to do with trucks, Ah but that's the strangest part, a few years later GMC took the Toronado chassis and stretched it to silly levels and added a 2nd rear axle and gave us this:

Digging up an old thread, was going to talk about the Pontiac truck, it's owned by the owner of north end garage in libertyville il, his name is Don, super cool guy. His family ownes three shops in the area including a restoration shop, he stops by the shop I work at from time to time, driving the gold Pontiac pickup

Well since you dug it up again, it gives me the opportunity to post the render I had done of my Pontiacish Jimmy GT project with a split surround (modified) GMC grill, Trans Am fender extractors and Gran Prix door handles....


Oh and Trans Am marker lights, and the headrests are actually from a Trans Am Indy pace car... and the Shelby Daytona Coupe wheels are somewhat Ponticish.

You're talking about the truck this thread started over? That is cool you know him, and the truck. What more can you tell about it?
