help with new rims

I'm an idiot when it comes to wheels and backspacing, tire size, etc.

Here is a pic of my truck currently:


fronts are 235/60/15 on I think 15x7 rims
rears are 255/60/15 on I think 15x8

I easily have close to 3" clearance on the inside of my rear tires right now FWIW.

I'm thinking about switching to American Racing tor thrust 2s in 17" but the sizes are confusing me.

here is my initial thoughts for a 17" setup:
17x9.5 rear with 5.5 backspacing
17x7 fronts with 4" backspacing

With these fit without any cutting? I want to keep the nice big lip in the rear, with the rears give me that affect also?

also, I think I read the biggest rear tire is a 295/65r15, whats that in a 17?

I want to go for that "pro street" look with fat rears, but don't want to cut the truck

ok did some more digging. looks like the 5.5 backspacing wouldn't give me the look I want- a nice wide rim lip showing in the back. I searched and old threads on here said having to order the "custom" version with 4.5" backspacing. that version is over $500 on summits website.

thinking about just sticking with 15s. I'm guess my current rear rims are 15x8 with 3.75 bs which is giving me that nice wide rear lip. maybe i could jump to 15x10 in the rear

Here is a thread with pics of my truck. 275 55 17 on 17x9 with 5" backspace. Stepsides are tight and you could probably get a 285 in the back on the same wheel but nothing bigger.

Ya I prefer to have the wider rear rim lip than the 17s give.

Looks like I'll just stick with 15s.

Bumping this since it looks like I'm back to -5s, do 15x10s with 4.25 bs fit under a c10 without cutting?

Ok so decided to pull my rear wheels and start measuring.

My current rims are 15x8 with only 1.75" back spacing. I didn't even know they offered wheels with that little bs.

So now I'm thinking I'm going with this setup:
15x10 cragar SS mags with 4.25 bs
For tires right now I'm thinking 295/60/15

I think this should work but looking for any who is running 15x10 rears.

I think it's 4/6 drop. I bought it already lowered with these tires

Well I think I figured out my wheel and tire combo:

Rears- 15x10 (4.25 BS) with 295/60r15
Fronts 15x7( 4" BS) with 245/60r15.

From what I read rears are the biggest you can run on a truck not tubbed. Fronts will be slightly bigger than my current tires, figure since I went bigger on the rears I want to go bigger in front too

Are you sure that is correct?
BACKSPACING is measured on the BACK side of the wheel.
Not the front side.

And wheel WIDTH is measured from the bead surface,... not the overall width.

yes I correctly measured backspacing. my drum sticks out the back of the rim that's how little there actually is

Like I said, I didn't know they made wheels with such little backspacing.

Well bumping this back up. Really never got many replies. getting ready to pull the trigger on the new wheels and was hoping maybe some folks running a similar setup would comment

Rears- 15x10 (4.25 BS) with 295/60r15
Fronts 15x7( 4" BS) with 245/60r15.

so its only half the answer for you because I am waiting for my lugs and center caps to come in before I put the front wheels on but the setup im using is

15x7 with 2.5" of backspace tires are 215/70/15 (again not on the truck yet obviously)
15x10 with 4.25" of backspace tires are 265/70/15

If you don't mind could you tell me how much clearance you have between the side all and the wheel tub on the inside?

That tire is taller than what I have in mind, but slightly narrower do I'm curious how much room you have to go wider

ive got MAYBE the width of a finger between the tire and the outer wheel well so I doubt you could really go that much wider if youre lowered

yeah it does but on a wheel that has an offset of 0

so basically you want a 10" wide wheel with 5" of backspace.

the 10" wide wheel with 4.25" of backspace pushes the wheel out too far to stick that size tire on it...or at least i think so

First off, thank you for the links. I've been using the size comparison, but that offset calculator helped me see whats going on.

interestingly, if I plug in my current rim and the new 15x10, my new rim will actually give me more clearance on the outside that what I currently have.

my current rims stick out further than the new because of the crazy backspacing.

I've started looking at 275/60r15. I want to go bigger, but I don't need the biggest possible if it might be an issue

Welp spent most of my evening researching these tires. Seems to be mixed reviews on if the 295s will fit, so think I'm gonna drop down a size.

Rears 275/60-15 on 15x10 with 4.25 bs
Fronts 245/60-15 on 15x7 with 4 bs

For tires I'm thinking of the Mickey Thompson sportsman series

like I said before man that backspacing is VERY aggressive on my truck

BUT I just noticed that you have a small window truck (so im assuming its a 67) and thus has the narrow rear end so you may have a chance at stuffing that tire in there.

I just know that there isn't a chance in hell that would fit on the back of my 72

yup I'm pretty sure I have the narrower axle. plus the tires you have are much taller than what I am looking at. I actually think if I put a 28" tall tire on my truck I could stick out past the fender and not have to worry about it hitting the tub, since they are so far below the body in my pic

the tires on my truck are not much taller.

they technically measure approx. 29.5" but on the truck they are more around the 29" mark

So just to close this thread in case anyone ever does some searching for answers.

I ended up this setup:
Rears 275/60-15 on 15x10 with 4.25 bs
Fronts 245/60-15 on 15x7 with 4 bs

The only reason I went with these rears over the 28x12x15 was this was the largest I could get with a white letter in they style tire I wanted. Tires and rims are mounted on the truck and I have 2" clearance between the tire and inner wheel tub, so yes 12" wide tires would have fit
