Pitman Arm Installation - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm working on a 1972 C10 restoration I started several years ago, and I don't remember how far the pitman arm slides onto the splined shaft of the steering gearbox. In trying to install the new pitman arm, I can only get it to a point where there is still 3/8" to 1/2" of spine showing between the pitman arm and what would be a tight fit to the bottom of the steering gearbox. I've torqued the heck out of it with a 3/4" drive wratchet and socket and I blieve I've got the threaded end of the splined shaft coming out below the nut. I'm at work and don't have any pictures right now, but could take some later on.

Any idea if this is the normal spot where the pitman arm belongs? I'm almost afraid of what it might take if I have to force it any further up the splined shaft of the steering gearbox.

The pitman arm/gearbox are tapered and it will only go in as far as the taper will allow it. Pics of mine. (The leak is from a bad hose I have.)

hello! i know this is a old thread, but i am having the same issue on my truck, the pitman arm does not slide all the way up as it did with the old arm(im installing all new front end) i can see where the old one left its mark, and im still bout a 1/4 inch short of the old mark. i have a identical new replacement part (moog 6143). I appreciate your help if possible. thank you!

No experience with this, but it looks like it would be easy to put the arm on up-side-down. Make sure you have it going on the proper way.

Make sure you torque the nut, if you have power steering it is torqued to 180 ft/lbs.
