Dana 44 and T221 Garage Find
Today picked up a K20 Dana 44 front axle with 4.56s, two Rockwell T221s- one married and one divorced, all in nice shape. The Dana 44 is in especially nice condition, not rusted. Also three boxes of parts, along with some other parts. Big stuff $75, and other $20. Their are two trans with married T221s still their, SM465 and three speed, parts are in MD. They are from a 60s Chevy 4x4 person, who got the parts many years ago as extras for his trucks. Few pictures of the parts.

Kimble,
You are welcome, can not believe how nice the axle is! Getting the codes off the tube to know exactly what it is. Thinking it may be future parts for the '64 as needed. Glad you got your clutch working! How about a detailed driving report on your brake upgrade, how they are different. Les |

Those big red lock outs look cherry! Nice score Les. Looks like you got the supports for the 221 as well. Cool!

Chris,
Thanks for the complements. The big red lockout hubs, do generate a lot of interest. Will try to get more history on this axle to learn more about them. Les |

Nice score on those parts! Those hub locks are worth a few bucks. I have hoarded a few sets myself...

Re: Dana 44 and T221 Garage Find
Jason,
Thanks, this Dana 44 8 lug appears to be a 1969 axle, with 4.57 gears. Do you have any Spicer chevy red ones, where you know what trucks they came from. Les |

Re: Dana 44 and T221 Garage Find
Whatever you do, don't turn the dials yet. Take the hub locks off, disassemble and regrease them. These hub locks are strong, but the dials are the weak point. When not lubricated properly they bind and then crack when you try to engage/disengage them.
From memory I believe that GM used blue dials until 72, then is 73 used yellow dials. Reds were off of fords. But dials were often swapped because of the breakage problem that I described above. Recently a member on here had several sets of dials machined out of aluminum and anodized blue. I had a 73 axle that had the yellow dials and I had a 69-70 axle that had one red and one blue. Hope that helps. Here's some more reading for you: http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/sm...;topic=22710.0

Adam,
Thinking of keeping the T221 divorced for now, will keep you in mind. Les |

Re: Dana 44 and T221 Garage Find
Jason,
Agree will not attempt to turn lock out dials, until they are cleaned and lubed correctly. Did get some code and build information from the axle, code looks like OU?, and build date is 6-2-69. From my research Chevy and/or GM had plain red plastic lock turns too. The GM ones were plain without a name. The time period seems to be around 69, and maybe some in 70 for axle that came with red ones. Your '69 would fit this time period. Also member has posted photo of GM replacement red ones, and other photo of reds. |
