Gear selection

Hello - I have 1975 Chevy Blazer with original small block 350 and Th350 automatic transmission. The gear selector is on the steering column.

when pulling the car down into gear there is an very fine line between 3rd and 4th. I often end up in third and don't realize it until I'm headed down the road at high rpm. I can slightly bump the gear selector and it slips up into the next gear.

I would like to adjust this. Any advice or idea on what to search in the boxes above to find resolution to the problem?

Re: Gear selection

If it's truely a TH350 then you don't have a 4th gear.
Once it shifts up does it drive fine?
If it's hanging in 2nd and a slight touch to the column shifter allows it to shift to 3rd, my guess is the bushings at the ends of the shift link (between the end of the column and the trans) are worn and you are having to 'overshift' to get it into gear. Check those and the link ends for excessive wear.
The detent notches for the gears are in the trans not the column. If it's not just a worn inkage, then the detent system inside the trans could be worn. That would be unusual but then again it's 40 years old.

check the spring to make sure it greased( not all dried out ). That where to adjust it. Make sure you do not strip the bolt.
