How many to lift a gutted cab?

OK I have been putting off a board member (not meaning to, stuff just keeps coming up or not going down) about picking up a totally bare cab from his house. Just a shell, no doors, no glass, no wiring ... zippo.

How many guys is it going to take to lift this in to the back of my K20? Can I do it with three, or will four be minimum? Been awhile since Ive lifted one like this, seems like it isn't that heavy, just really awkward.

As a certified "Old Fart" I say 4 as a minimum.........in addition to that the "Old Farts" should recruit 4 young guys.........and volunteer to buy the beer after a successful landing!

Re: How many to lift a gutted cab?

3 can do it but it's likely gonna be tough. 4 is better. Beware it's going to be very nose heavy.

Re: How many to lift a gutted cab?

Four guys can move a cab around, but I'm not sure about lifting up into a bed. I think I'd want it staged up to the level of the bed first. Use cribbing to build the height up one layer at a time. Four of us loaded a cab onto a dovetail trailer and slid it forward, no problem, last summer. I like trailers over beds for being lower and no risk of damage to the truck. An engine hoist can help at that height. I have installed cabs alone by walking it up two planks onto two planks on the frame, then sliding them out.

Re: How many to lift a gutted cab?

my kid an i have picked up and moved a few empty cabs but usually we had a easy spot too put them down and its tough with just the 2 of us. in the back of a pickup isnt a easy spot to put one down
.
we used a few tires to set the cab on to keep from damageing the cab corners.
the last one i picked up we put on a small utility trailer that was much easier than trying to dump it in the back of the kids swb 67 like we planned on doing.

after i had finished the metal work on my 67 cab 4 of us picked it up and put it on alot safer and less chance of damage.

using the picker to get it off i did it myself no problem but ya need a good floor.

i would say at least 4 guys too put one in a pickup bed.
pick it up and get one rocker on the tailgate then let them guys get up in the bed to get it in the rest of the way.

now if you need it moved gingerly the more buds the better

Re: How many to lift a gutted cab?

The cab of my 1972 GMC was lifted by 4 guys from one frame to another. It still had the windshield and back glass in it, and the dashboard and all the wiring. Everything else was stripped out of it.

've done it quiet a few times with my engine hoist and straps easy to do with one person if thought out correctly

No less than 6!!

The only thing the Old Farts should lift is a beer, and one of them needs to use his index finger to point the young guys in the right direction... that would be 4 young ones, yourself, and whomever you feel like relaxing with... so minimum 6!

One ! If you have this, I'd say 4 min 6 to be safe if your doing it manually and putting it in the bed of a pick-up.

Re: How many to lift a gutted cab?

I made this very simple and have loaded it by myself in the back of a truck, I used ratchet straps to help secure it to the main cross bar. Lifted it up as high as it would go and backed right under it (I removed the tailgate for this)

Re: How many to lift a gutted cab?

Lifting it up with a hoist is a good way to get it off the frame, but lifting in to the back of a K20 with a four inch lift wont work. Just wont go high enough.

That 4" lift is gonna be fun. I'd see about getting a small trailer. You could probably rent something from uhaul or similar and save years of life in your back.

Re: How many to lift a gutted cab?

put the cab on its side with a couple tires on the ground to protect it then back the truck up to the back of the cab tip it into the back of the truck then lift the side and slide it into
the box but i dont think a cab will fit in the box of a truck on its back so you might want to get a trailer.

Re: How many to lift a gutted cab?

To lift into a bed you need to "curl" that weight. That's the deal breaker on that for me. Just have the person bring the frame over and haul it all out

You can drop the rear onto the drums and lose a lot of height. Or dig holes. I love suggesting how someone else should do something.

Re: How many to lift a gutted cab?

Cab is sitting on the ground. When I have moved big chunks of truck around in the past I'm usually out at the in-laws farm and I just use the loader tractor.

Last time I moved a cab that wasn't out at the farm it was a complete cab. Everything was still on it, probably even had a full tank of gas lol. It was a long time ago, but I remember it took a whole bunch of us haha.

The problem for me is gathering enough people. All my friends are in their 50s and we seem to be pretty busy with kids and grand kids, or finally having free weekends to get away because there are no kids.

I did it once with 4 guys.... not too bad but not as good as leverage from some sort of equipment!
