63 Cool Pack A/C on CL in San Diego $300

I'm so depressed. Still recouping from surgery, have no funds, now I find a second Cool Pack complete unit for sale like the one offered earlier this week. I called the guy just to make sure of what I'm missing out on. Not only does he have the A/C unit for sale but it includes a deluxe heater with it. Been searching for years to find this stuff.

Thanks for the offer Pimp,
Hopefully someone on here will get it. It would be nice to see it installed in a fellow members truck. My time will come.

My OE 65 A/C is sitting in my garage gathering dust since I replaced it with VA.

Yes it will work in a 64. I had heard that they did not get the center dash unit ready in time for the 64 production year and were using this unit to put A/C in a 64. Ronzo's brothers 65 has a unit in it. I have the installation instruction sheets available online if someone needs them to install the unit.

Are you sure thats a cool pack ? Only one picture and the plastic piece at the top of the picture is the dash part for 64-66 with the pull cables , goes behind center dash vent. I see a 63 heater box but thats it.

I took the plunge and called him before posting. While we were on the phone he opened the other boxes and described the Fridgedaire compressor, dryer, condenser and the ivory evaporator. Then he described the heater core and other parts. Not the best photo to show the unit

Just got off the phone with the man , its a 64-66 unit. He could not find the center vent but he has the black plastic vent with the three cables and chrome knobs and the black plastic unit with the evaporator core in it. Hes going to lay it all out and have his friend take more pictures he said. I wish it were a cool pack !

See I had asked him if the unit was Ivory and he said yes. I asked him if it had Cool Pack on it and he had said yes.
He doesn't have access to the internet so I couldn't send him pictures to verify.

I know , Im not doubting you. He doesn't own it , it was his neighbors. He told me everything was black and nothing had vents in the front or bowtie like a cool pack would. I was going to buy it for you !

Man I make one cruel joke about an aluminum grille in Wisconsin and you still take it to heart. OK, I'm sorry 60-66,.
Nice gesture on your part, I thank you.
They'll be others, just need time.

Possibly what he thought was ivory was this packing that was square and off white (last pic). I called him yesterday morning about it and he said he would not open up all the bubble wrap but assured me it was all there for a 63 and that it was complete. I thought what the heck, I am 2 hours away and would drive down there first thing today and check it out. I set up a 9:00 to 9:30 am time to come look at it. When I got there he said there was a guy from Canada who had a friend in San Diego that was going to come look at it and a guy from New York that had a son stationed at Camp Pendleton that was also going to come look at it. It belonged to his neighbor, the neighbor sold his truck, moved and left the AC unit behind.

He said yes to all the questions I asked and told me that the condenser at the bottom of the box was just like new, as you can see it is rotten and when you touch it pieces just fall off. Nice guy, looked like he was in his mid 70's. He just wanted his space back under his back porch where it was all sitting.

I offered the guy $250 and he said yes so fast that he probably would have taken $200. I was going to come on here and show pics of my new find and I saw this thread

Thanks for the info and more so the pics.
Aluminum condenser is 1964+, 63 still had the steel condenser.
The brackets for the compressor are for a V8 from what I can see.
If you can get hold of a 65 or 66 Custom Accessories Installation Manual it will show you step by step installation of the air conditioning unit.

Stay Cool.

Thank You Norm!

The 63 service manual that came with the ac parts has some reference to the Cool Pack ac, 37 or so pages. Do you know if the 64 service manual will have similar? I ordered the assembly dvd off of ebay last week but not the service manual yet.

Here is the compressor sitting roughly where it goes on my 283. By the way, this truck came with a Sears compressor in the bed when I got it, there are 2 holes in the cab and 2 through the core support so I think it had an aftermarket ac in it at some point. It also has a 3 grove crank pulley and a 6 blade fan (not sure if those last 2 are stock).

I am assuming I will need to machine some spacers for the 3 bolts that go through the exhaust manifold.

There are only 9 pages in the 64 Shop Manual dedicated to servicing the A/C.

There are over 30 pages in the Accessories Installation Manual. This has all the dimensions and locations of hardware required.

Re: 63 Cool Pack A/C on CL in San Diego $300

In the pic in the last post I thought the previous owner cut the snorkel on the air filter housing but after looking at the ac compressor placement I bet they did it when the Sears ac was installed. I found a nice looking replacement on ebay and it is on its way, we will see if it fits with this compressor.

Looks like it will line up with my existing crank pulley but, after the belt comes around the ac clutch the water pump/fan pulley would be in the way of it returning to the crank. Is there a 2 grove pulley for the water pump so the belt can go around all 3 (crank, ac then water pump)?

You would need a 63 Shop Manual and a 64 Supplement to be effective at any servicing on your truck.
The Accessories Installation Manual will help you more when you install.

Looking at the 66 Manual there is a double pulley on the water pump.
