Wheel fitment issue

OK, back with more questions.

From the earlier help I received I determined that the frame I purchased was a 67 and was manufactured in St. Louis, MO (just East of me 130 miles!)

Someone put a disc brake set-up under it that is 6 lug. I'm thinking it must be from another later model truck rather than an aftermarket piece - but not positive.

Problem I am experiencing is that the wheel rubs the end of the steering arm of the spindle. I thought that the wheels on it must be wheels that are only for drum brake, so I bought a set of wheels that came off of a 93 Chevy truck to put on the rolling chassis. I guessed that would take care of it, but nooooo! They still rub.

Any ideas on what I am missing here? Thanks again and sorry to be such a bone head - I'm sure it is something simple, but what? Jay

Re: Wheel fitment issue

I'm not a 2 wheel drive guy at all but it sounds to me like your backspace is wrong. I know the late model wheels have a different backspace than the wheels that came on these trucks.

Re: Wheel fitment issue

Late model 6 brake front end won't bolt on. 99.9% sure you have aftermarket 6 lug disc conversion.

Sounds like you are trying to use 15" rims with a lot of backspacing and they are hitting the tire rod end. These trucks were designed to run a zero offset rim of 7" in diameter which is about 4" backspacing and anything more gets too close to hard parts.

If you want to run a lot of backspacing it's time to go to 16" or 17" rims so that the parts will fit all the way inside the wheel.

Re: Wheel fitment issue

Thanks for responses so far! I will need to check, but I thought the wheels I bought were 16". The 15" that were on it to start with were dead against the steering arm for sure.
I will look through my other wheels and see if I can find one with the offset that Mike C indicated. I'm not concerned about getting deep offset - I just want to be able to roll the chassis around to work on it!!

Re: Wheel fitment issue

If you aren't going to do anything but roll it, you can stack 1/4" (or more) of washers on the studs to space the wheel out until you buy the actual wheels you are going to run.

That thought had crossed my mind. Did see that the chassis has drop spindles today so that explains part of the problem?

Re: Wheel fitment issue

Yup. That moves the spindle up relative to the steering arm meaning it takes a larger rim to clear. I'd be looking for some larger diameter wheels. IMO, 18's are the best spot for tire availability right now, but 17's still my preference with as tall a tire as you can make work.

Once again, my opinion, but the 235 55 17 front on an 8" rim and the 275 55 17 rear on a 9" rim works great. 4 1/2" bs on front, 5" rear.
