Re: 700R4 shift linkage question

There's no "correct" linkage because it was never offered in our trucks, so whatever you wind up with it'll be custom.

How far off are you with the linkage as-is? Pics? Need more info.

Re: 700R4 shift linkage question

I have NOTHING. I bought a auto steering column, but I am replacing my 3 on the tree setup and transmission. Not sure where to begin...

Re: 700R4 shift linkage question

I bought my '71 already converted to a 700r4 trans. The shift linkage seems to be the original configuration and works perfectly. So, I would go that route.

Best of luck, setting up a 700R4 isn't an easy task.

Yep, this. I just got my '72 back on the road after a 700r4 swap, and it was kinda-working with the stock TH350 linkage, but it was sloppy. I used a Lokar 1800 linkage kit and it worked really well. I had to bend it a tiny bit to get it to clear, but now gear selection is really tight and exact.

I made my own shifter rod out of a piece of aluminum tubing and threaded both ends (right hand thread and left hand threads for him joints to make a "turnbuckle" for easy adjustments) here is a link to the page I just posted pictures to, see post #9

Well,so far to date, the biggest obstacle was the detent cable and the carb pivot point, which I have already done.the neutral safety switch is the next item I'm looking into. Since I used the majority of the factory linkage shouldn't be that bad. We'll see soon enough.

Re: 700R4 shift linkage question

I built what I call the "7" shaft that activates the transmission from 3/8 round stock, then used one of the original 3-tree shifter rods to connect it to the column shift. Required about an hours time, some scrap metal, and a welder.

Lokar and Kugel Komponents make a linkage kit that will fix you right up.

Re: 700R4 shift linkage question

Looks like I am required to get another column gear indicator. Someone on here had that exact one for sale a while back but I think they were all sold.

Re: 700R4 shift linkage question

You can get an overdrive indicator from any vendor. The Lokar or kugel linkage will allow you to dial it in so the pointer lines up.

well, the Tilt columns have an "OD" lens available from many of the Vendors here, the stock non-tilt columns do not. I made mine from a piece of lexan/plexi glass and took the overdrive lens from a Ididit column indicator set and used some clear RTV to attach it to the plexiglass. works just fine until somebody makes a proper indicator..... How ever, I just bought a Van Tilt column and solved that problem......

Re: 700R4 shift linkage question

I just bought a restored tilt column that was rebuilt with NOS parts. I was completely dissatisfied with the non tilt column that I bought for automatic transmission and I am selling it. Now I am going to buy the overdrive indicator that will fit the tilt column.

I have the Kugel setup for 700r4. I need the overdrive indicator because nothing lines up. I had to install it b/c the original linkage was in the way of my new hedman headers. The rubber grommet end on the column connection is cheap and is already falling apart but it still works. Super easy to install tho.

Unless you buy or have a tilt column, finding an overdrive indicator won't happen.
I had to make one for a non tilt column. I bought an indicator for an "Ididit"
Tilt column, took a piece of clear Lexan and traced the original indicator lens pattern onto the Lexan, then cut the new one out, carefully sanded the edges to keep from scratching the plastic. I then took the new "Ididit" indicator lense and placed some clear RTV sealer on the face of the Lexan, and attached the indicator to it. Here are a few pictures of the one I did, just before I bought a van tilt column.
