Smile Exhaust Manifold Suggestions

56 Chevy Pickup. Small Block 350. Mustang power steering rack. Any suggestions for an exhaust manifold that will allow the steering shaft connections. I don't know if the block hugger type manifold will give enough room. An old style Ram Horn Manifold. I'm already returning one set of headers that will not work. Thanks

Re: Exhaust Manifold Suggestions

The Ramhorn manifolds with straight down out lets fit real good. That's what came on them with a V-8 engine.

Re: Exhaust Manifold Suggestions

Ramshorn x3. Unless you are racing they flow great, are quieter than headers, will not rust out like headers and drop to miss steering stuff. Here are mine on the driver side. IF you need a little more flow the 57 Corvette 2.5" ones are reproduced for guys drag racing in the stock classes that require a stock manifold. I have always ran them with 2.5" exhaust pipes with no issues.

Very nice, clean engine compartment there ... Ram Horns should work well.

Not running m11 here but another vote for Corvette style center dump ram horns. They also came on 4wd trucks and chinese replacements are available new for about 40 bucks each. Headers are nice but I prefer cast iron.

Try Speedway or maybe Zip or some other good Corvette supplier. edit: I see you have Corvettes. Mine is a 69 hence my screen name. I searched out originals for mine since it had headers when I got it. Bought Chinese aftermarket for my project truck since it's a bit of a hybrid.

115 pair not too bad for 2 1/2.

Re: Exhaust Manifold Suggestions

Mine are from a C4 as well, 1986.
I had the smog tubes cut off, and holes welded. Painted them with barbeque paint from Home Depot. they dull out to a dark gray, like lacquer primer, and don't leak.
You have to have the pipe flanges from the corvette to make it work because the muffler shops can't get the flanges.
The left manifold had to be shaved at the head flanges on an angle to kick the header in to clear the frame.
I took 1/8" off the inside bottom, and angle milled it to clear.
I could have ground off the tubes where the bolts are and used header bolts, but every set of headers I ever had loosened up. These never loosened up on my corvette, so I went with the ugly stock look.
Better than cast, don't hold in the heat.

Sorry for the cell phone pic. It was kinda dark when I made the pic.

Re: Exhaust Manifold Suggestions

I'm glad to see that folks are opting for the C4 manifolds. They are an under-used solution imo. The only problem I've ever seen with these manifolds is cracking where the four tubes are welded together at the union, and this is usually only found on earlier cars with high mileage.

Re: Exhaust Manifold Suggestions

Here is how I did my '53 3100, typical GM cast iron manifolds, maybe from a truck, they're everywhere. They are shaped like they were made for this.

Any chance you have part numbers for these? Or at least what years they came on GM trucks? Trucks only? You're right that they look like an ideal solution, at least for typical street engines that aren't putting out mega horsepower.

Re: Exhaust Manifold Suggestions

Any good junkyard should have this type, it came on many cars/trucks of the 70s-late 80s, sorry no part numbers. I pick them up at swapmeets for $10 (sometimes less), just watch out for the cracked ones. They usually crack around the center banks.

Re: Exhaust Manifold Suggestions

Good info, thanks. Will they all typically have those air injection ports you had to plug?

Re: Exhaust Manifold Suggestions

Some do, some don't. There are many variations of these manifolds, as I said, just check very well for cracks.

Those are the ones I use for the trucks that I build, but I need the ram horns for a 56 2 door BelAir I am doing
I like the ones from the trucks because they have a stiffing bar across the top of the manifold.
Weld them up, grind them smooth and Jet Coat them also

Re: Exhaust Manifold Suggestions

I have 2 sets of rams horns, and a set of the lower rear exit manifolds. Looking to get $150 for each pair of 57 originals, and $100 pair for the rear exit ones.

I just saw a guy that owns a local vineyard and he told me he gets $50 for any of these types of manifolds all day. Holy carp!
