Re: New Member with a 66 C20
I've seen a lot of 3/4 tons with the 70-80's hubcaps, maybe I'll do that and just paint them more of a 60's color than chrome and gold!?!?[/QUOTE]
Thats what I did.. Oh and check the block number could be a Corvette 327! |

Re: New Member with a 66 C20
Sorry to thread jack, but Irishblueyes, do you have any more info on your painted hubcaps. What hubcaps did you use for raw materials and paints and any other helpful tips.

Re: New Member with a 66 C20
After losing one of the original 65 hubcaps on the road and replacing it for 40 bucks I bought 4 of the 73 to 87 10" caps. My original rims are clipless type, just the 3 nubs. You can get those 73/87 caps cheap. Degrease with citrus degreaser then sand with fine grit sanding sponge from Home Depot. I painted with Ace brand Gloss White. Spray on full wet coat then let sit for 3 or 4 minutes to get real tacky. Then lay on about 4 coats, the tacky coat will allow the heavy paint to hold on and not run. Go lighter on the vertical sides then allow to dry for at least 2 days in the shade. Then tape over Bowtie with regular blue painters tape. Use an Exacto knife to cut away inside edge of Bowtie, not the outside edge or the top middle. If you go slow you can get it exactly perfect. I used a thick plastic sheet cut out for center hole as template to spray Ace brand Gloss Orange for the center, do two light coats that cover and wait about 5 minutes between the two. To heavy of solvent from the rattle can, can eat into the white finish. Let dry for an hour or so and peel away Bowtie tape. It will look like factory automotive paint, good luck!

Re: New Member with a 66 C20
327 nice!!
truck has a little over 80k miles on the odometer, not sure if the engine has ever been rebuilt, it runs strong, no smoke and no oil consumption so far. Was orange the original color of the 327's? any way to know if it came factory with a 327 or not by the VIN? Hopefully the motor has plenty of life left in it, i havent ran a compression check or anything, but like I said its running strong so far! I think if it does end up giving me problems this would be worth rebuilding instead of a crate 350 for sure. I'll see if i can find some 3/4 wheels from a junkyard and and paint some later model hubcaps, i'll probably wait until a rebuild the front suspension though, the tires on it have pleny of life left they are just too big for my taste and noisy, but no point replacing tires that dont need it replacing yet! Thanks everyone!

Re: New Member with a 66 C20
Check the VIN number on the block to see if it matches the truck VIN- that will tell you if it is the original engine. Nice buy- nice truck!

Re: New Member with a 66 C20
There is no engine VIN match on '66 pickups. The code on block pad ( front of block near right cylinder head) will reveal only year of block and application : C 10 C 20 manual trans or automatic etc.
