1960-62 T-5 Help

I have some question for any one who has swapped in a T-5 into a 60-62 with the original torsion bar suspension:
Did the rear cross member were you adjust the torsion bars get in the way?
Did the transmission clear it okay?
Any issues with the emergency brakes ?
Any tips, tricks or advice for installing the T*5 into the 60-62.
Thanks in advance

Re: 1960-62 T-5 Help

Bolts in place like a charm. I did use a rear transmission mount though not really needed but could have helped my 406cui from twisting the case. The driveshaft had to be shorted. S10 tail shaft to move stick forward but covers speedometer. Everything else is stock. I did upgrade to TKO 600 and had to use hydraulic clutch bearing vs fork to clear headers.Hooker Compatition HKR 2466.

Re: 1960-62 T-5 Help

Very nice thanks for the help! I have a Camaro T5 but since I have bucket seats I will keep the Camaro tailshaft , plus all the s10 tailshafts are running about 250.00 ,more then I paid for the whole tranny !
I have a one piece driveshaft that I will get shortened I still got to see how much but a local shop can cut it for me

Re: 1960-62 T-5 Help

I would never run regular atf in a t5, if you do your research you will find that the only fluid you should use is synchromesh and that is what gm recommended for their vehicles with t5's. When searching online to see what kind of fluid to use I came across multiple people saying that atf will wreck the transmission. I even found one guy that said he had two t5's burn out on him thinking it was bad luck but as soon as he switched from atf to synchromesh on his third t5 he had no problems at all. Kinda scary what the wrong fluid can do and that is why I did so much research and spent $50 just to fill my transmission. Even my transmission builder told me that synchromesh is all I should use in a t5

Re: 1960-62 T-5 Help

Description: RedLine's D4 ATF is their most versatile automatic transmission fluid recommended for use where Dexron III, Dexron II, Mercon, and Mercon V fluids are recommended to provide a GL-4 level of gear protection. D4 ATF allows for high-temp operation without varnishing valves and clutches, and offers excellent cold-weather operation. It can also be used with manual transmissions and transaxles, like T-5, T-45, T-56, and late model BMWs. Want to keep your investment protected? Use Red Line D4 ATF!

Yes that is exactly what I would use except in Canada it was double the price..
I trust this more than any atf since it's what gm originally recommended. T5's have been around since the 80's and were used with synchromesh so it has been proven that it works without any problems. But it does depend if your t5 is a W.C. (World class) or a N.W.C. (Non world class). If it's a W.C. Then use what LVPHOTOS suggested. If it's a N.W.C. (Which I assume it is since you only have a 250 and I'm pretty sure I saw you mention it was nwc) then use synchromesh like I suggested.

LV PHOTOS, the redline d4 or dexron 3 does say for t5, t45, t56 etc but it only applies to world class t5's which are very similar to the t45, t56 etc. The non world class (nwc) have syncro's made of just brass and tend to not like atf possibly because of some of the detergents used (not 100% sure that's why). The reason I recommend synchromesh is because im pretty sure that sleepysals t5 is a non world class. Just to clarify, W.C. T5 use fluid like you recommended. N.W.C. T5 use synchromesh.
I would not want to start an argument with a great forum member over something silly I just don't want sleepysal to have transmission problems.

Re: 1960-62 T-5 Help

I was going by what the race shop Fig Speed was recommending after a $3000 upgrade to TKO 600. All the guys run the Redline in their Mustangs. Royal Purple has a Synchro Max and the guys who built my trans said guys were running a 50/50 ish mix of Gear and ATF. These are real gearbox and axle guys. Mine didn't like the lighter oil, too much fighting 2 to 3. Swapped in the Purple and it went away. It's what you want pay and how long you will go during changes. Plus 100+ degrees here a good oil is preferable.
The guy who bought my set up was told by the guy who built my trans that the V8 t5 was the way to go. Not noing I was selling mine. Small world. But you work with the best shops in town your bound to run into people with same taste.
Hammer down.

Re: 1960-62 T-5 Help

Again his is a nwc t5 so it needs synchromesh or gear oil less than 50w. I don't want to argue about it anymore so I'm out of here. Sleepysal if you have any other questions just pm me
