'59 6 cyl oil pan gasket help

Hey guys,

I have a 59 short fleet with the original 6 cyl 235 engine. I have an oil leak from somewhere near the oil pan and front of the engine. I want to order new gaskets but am having a difficult time.

Questions:
#1. If I drop the oil pan, do I even need a gasket? Can I just use permatex?

#2. LMC offers a rear main seal (#30-4261 page 98), but will their oil pan gaskets (#30-4298 page 98) work on my 2nd series 235ci truck engine? The catalog mentions 1st series.....but not 2nd series.

#3. Is there a front main seal too? LMC has the rear, but I don't see a front seal listed?

#4. Should I replace the timing cover gaskets w/seals (#30-4311 page 98) to help stop the oil leak or is the timing chain NOT connected to the oil pan for a seal?

So, I want to purchase an oil pan gasket set for my '59 235ci 6 cyl original engine to stop the leaks. Can anyone provide feedback or part numbers? Maybe even from a local part store? Or what have you done to fix your oil leak?

Thanks
Tod

rockauto.com has FEL-PRO FS7619B3 and is a full set, it has the head gasket for $48.

The timing cover has a gasket and seal but also has a cam plate that has a gasket, You take the cam out to change this one, but it seldom goes bad

No timing chain on that engine as the crank gear directly drives the cam gear. If I had it that far apart and it still had the fiber cam gear I'd change the gear to a metal gear. The fiber gear is a little quieter but they do fail at inopportune

You can pick up that same gasket set at O'reillys for 55 bucks and no shipping charges. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...2287&ppt=C0026 Even though you would have the head gasket and a few others left over it might come out better than buying gaskets and seals one at a time to get all of the oil leaks fixed. If it is only leaking on the bottom you can get the pan gasket, timing cover set and rear seal for about 30.00 at O'Reillys.

I'm a source checker and usually check several sources and compare before laying out money on things I don't need right at the moment. Sometimes you can buy local and save the shipping and come out ahead.
