A 400 is bulit proof, but eats up horse power.
A 350 can be built as strong, and uses less power. ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. the 400's get my vote, the old man's got an 84 3/4 to 4x4 with a 350 and TH400, that tranny's been hot enough twice to melt the spedo cable off and those were the only 2 times he changed the fluid, it's outlived 3 engines and has over 300,000 mi on it, and 200,000 of those were pulling a 7x24 gooseneck stock trailer hauling cows, horses, and whatever else you could put in a trailer. Like longhornmail said, "bulletproof"

To replace a TH350 with a Th400 you'll need a different transfer case and adapter OR the correct 400 adapter and a different input gear in the case you have (assuming you have a NP205). The 400 stuff is WAY harder to find. If you already have a 350, adapter, and transfer case I would rebuild the 350, get an external cooler, and install a temperature guage.

Turbo 350 has a high first gear which works best for off the line power. You can build a 350 to be very stong and 350's are more available in a 4x4 setup.

I have a 71 3/4 ton 4x4 Chevy. I too looked
into the 400. Too much money and hassle. If you already have the stock set up as far as transfer case and adapter, rebuild 350 to heavy duty parts and specs and you will be amazed how much that 350 can handle.Even behind a big block, if that's your pleasure! |

I'm a hands-down T400 fan. But just out of experience, I had a '81 Chevy 4x4 with 35" mudders on it. I had that thing burried more times than I can remember. This truck had the T350 in it, and bone stock to boot. That tranny lasted me 9 years!! So don't be scared of it, if that is what you already have. Like stated above, have it rebuilt with good parts, and you will have no problems with it.

I say go with the TH350, it can be built bulit proof and it does not take as much HP to turn it.

This may be long but gotta tell ya what a friend of mine told me, who is a machinest, drag races/ pro stock/big block chevys. Another friend with a jeep/bigblock chevy 800hp was blowing 400turbos left and right. I was telling Fuzzy htis and he said the guy should get a 350 turbo and build it. He said the 350 for some things are stronger, I think like low end torque. I have always had 350's and never had any problems with any of them. Mine is beefed up with some 400 turbo stuff. Shifts like it has a shift kit and it doesn't. Fuzzy is very smart, a low budget racer, takes tranny apart after every race day and experiments with things.
