Let's talk rear ends....
Is it possible and has anyone successfully swapped a newer disk brake full float GM corp rear end (AAM 11.5) for the 73-87 factory GM corp drum rear end?

Re: Let's talk rear ends....
Forgot to add.....
I had the truck out on the interstate today and she was really rev'd up @ 55mph, guess I'm used to my Duramax/6 spd Allison. Doubt I'd be doing much towing/hauling with this truck, mostly city & weekend trip expressway driving. With a 350/SM465, would it be worth considering swapping the 4.10s for 3.73s?

Re: Let's talk rear ends....
I have the same on my 82 K20 14 bolt 4:10 corp rear end and the 465 trans. 55 mph seems like a mild rev 65 to 70 seems nice too. It jumps up to 85 easily and seems like there is plenty left. I know this doesn't mean much w/o tach numbers. Am putting in a tach soon, am waiting for it. But I really like the 465 and the 4:10 got torque and snort.

Re: Let's talk rear ends....
This truck is new to me and hasn't had much road time since I've had it...mainly fixing things to make it road worthy. This was the first time I had stretched it's legs out on the interstate. Truck has a factory tach and I was surprised that it was running close to 2500 rpm @ 60mph. I'm sure the truck had a lot more in it, I was just unwilling to push it until I've got a few more hours on the road with it and a couple more repairs completed. I know what you mean, she's got plenty of grunt!

Re: Let's talk rear ends....
2500 is barely breathing for a 350, it isnt a duramax. Probably half the torque and hp

Well I'll give her a push next time..... In any case has anyone every swapped their vintage rear end for a 2001-? AAM 10.5 or 11.5? I'm assuming that the master cylinder would need to change and maybe an adjustable proportioning block installed. I read a post about converting a vintage rear end using AAM 10.5 or 11.5 hubs out using adapter brackets from Right Gear & Axle but according to their facebook page they are permanently closed. To be honest, I would be happy just to upgrade to a slip off drum axle.

Re: Let's talk rear ends....
There are two AAM axles that have 14bolts in the cover but only one of them is a proper 14bolt.
The 11.5" AAM is what GM used behind the 8.1L & D-Max. It's also used by the Dodge division of Chrysler. The 11.5" AAM has no pinion nose support and is visibly different from the GM Corporate full floating 10.5" axle that's commonly referred to as a "14bolt" axle. The newest iteration of the 10.5" 14bolt is made by AAM not GM and it has disc brakes. The brake mount is different from your older axle. The spring perches and shock mounts on both of these axles will not line up with our trucks or the T400 chassis. You will get to weld on a new set. GM moved to metric studs before these axles were made so you'll need to change them to SAE studs or run 16 Metric wheel lugs. I like to keep all 32 the same. GM changed the 8-lug bolt circle from 8x6.5 to 8x180mm in 2010 or 2011. To be safe I'd stick with an axle made in 2009 or prior. Bunches of information here if you can ignore the urination distance and male member length contests. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/chevy...geability.html
