Original Side Mirror Photos Please
Could someone please post a photo of the mirrors that my 72 3/4 ton 4x4 Cheyenne Super came with?
They were DG4 BELOW-EYELINE MIRROR option. I would also like any other photos of mirrors that were optional for that year / truck. Thanks guys! Darren

Here is another option. These swing out and are intended for wide trailers and campers. I think these are refered to as west coast mirrors on 69-72 trucks. 67/68 west coast mirrors are different.

This is your 3rd option. I think thats it for OE mirrors in 72. Thanks to all those I "borrowed" pics from.

I need help with an ID on these mirrors.
I'm guessing these mirrors on my truck are aftermarket? Not original?

mirrors
Darren, yours are aftermarket. Steve I believe yours are stock except for welds !! They did make a close aftermarket version that had a different set of top arms that were flat instead of tubular.

from what I have seen there are 2 different kinds of tripod style mirrors. here is a shot of the mirror that is from my truck, labeled as "D29 r/v Jr." (notice where the top arm of the mirror mounts):

here is darren's pic, to show that these mirrors are not correct. see how the ends of the legs angle down? that isn't original. it looks like it originally had smaller mirrors because of the rusty holes, but who can say for sure.
here is the next kind, what I believe is the "DG4 below eyeline" that I think Darren is referring to. the tripod is actually smaller than the ones in from my truck, and they mount slightly higher up on the door (almost right under the vent window). this is kinda far away but enough to be able to tell the difference. they mount in almost the same location as in darren's pic. this style seems to be prevalent on 71-72 trucks, with the other being dominant in 69-70, and true west coast jr. mirrors (hoop that extends from top of door to bottom of window, rectangular mirror in between) came on 67-68, but shared the same D29 RPO as the 69-70 ones.

I disagree with the mirrors on the GMC firetruck being OE, I think they are an aftermarket unit available back then. My impression is that the below eye line and the RV Jr west coast mirror are the same just the rpo and description changed sometime between 69 and 72.
I think the mirrors on that GMC firetruck were added when it was painted as the OE style would have obstructed the writing on the door. That and the fact that the lower 2 supports of the tripod appear to fall uncormfortably close to where upper trim moulding would have been applied, had the truck been so equipped. Makes no sense for the factory to have a style of mirror that can't be used with all trim options. Steven Sellers, your's are OE, so are all pics except Darrens and the firetruck IMO. Darren, if you locate a stainless set like Deans or a painted set like 1969GMC's you're good. Note, if you find the correct tripod setup, you can buy a universal replacement head.

Keep an eye out for me, for a set like Deans. Please. They need to be in Superior shape. As they will be for the restoration of my 72 3/4 Ton Cheyenne Super 4x4. I'm not in a hurry. It takes time to find the perfect set. Thanks! Darren

time to drag this post up from the dead, lol.
I have been looking at every truck that has been on here because I swear that there was a smaller variety of tripod mirrors made, like the ones darren posted. I have found some more, and I know this doesn't prove anything, but it leads me to believe there were 2 styles factory. first is this set on a '72 Cheyenne that Too Much Stuff is selling. there is no RPO given, but these sure do look original. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...threadid=92410 second is this set, also on a truck for sale by Too Much Stuff. This time its a GMC. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...threadid=92415 Here is another board member's truck: Another: Another: and another: These seem to be mostly on 71 and 72 trucks. who knows?

Adam, I'm coming to the same conclusion too. See my comments here
It could be a simple matter of 2 different suppliers and using whichever mirror style the particular factory had available at time of build. I also agree its a 72 or 71 thing.

In need of mirrors
Darren sorry to barge in on your post. I find this topic to be very interesting, especially since I'm in need of mirrors I can't find, at least locally. I'm looking to purchase a set of the 67-68 D29 West Coast Mirror Jr as shown in 1969 GMC's pictured post but in stainless steel. Thanks also to 1969 GMC for posting the pics. It's been helpful. Man, would I love to have those mirrors in an all stainless steel set-up.
Thanks Take Care NGN Nick N.J. |

theses are what came with mine
heres a little trick I used when mounting the mirrors, I made little plastic washers out of a black plastic from a oil container, so the metal mirror wasn't touching the paint. the plastic is thin enough that you don't really see it

Casey--that seems like a great idea! Should head off another source of rust by not chipping/wearing the paint at the mounting points. I will never mount tripod mirrors, but if I were going to, I would use your method!

just make sure if you go aftermarket, that you get a good quality mirror!
I bought a set of s.s. tri-pod's but that weren't that great. at the bottom of the "tube" that the mirror head attaches to, they have a threaded insert that's crimped into the end .....well the mirror kept moving on me, so I kept tightening this bolt. Well after tightening a couple times, it stripped(the crimpping came loose). so needless to say, i'm looking for a quality set now too Jason
