72' rearend

Anyone know what late model rearend would fit under my 72'? Thinking about just swapping rearends instead of having mine rebuilt. I have 20x10's under it and like how they are almost flush with fender. So I would like to find something that is the same width rearend as what I have now cause I don't want to have to run spacers like most have to on square body's. Thanks in advance.

Why would you not just rebuild it......are you wanting to change the gear ratio? If not bearings and seals are not that expensive.

I like the gear ratio I have but was looking to go with a limited slip for the LS swap I done. It was hard to hear the rearend before over the whine of the 3spd manual. I had planned on having it rebuilt but was looking for other options

It's just loud as far as the whining goes. I'm gonna pull the diff cover off and look at everything and put new fluid in.

Has the gear been changed that you know of?

Whining from the diff can be from bad carrier bearings,(although that's usually more of a roaring sound) or if the gear was not properly set up when installed it can make a whining noise as well.
Bad wheel bearing usually squeak and pop....

If it whines under acceleration and the pitch (sound) of the whine changes slightly when you decelerate it's likely the gear.

Sorry I meant roaring sound under deceleration. As far as I know it's the original rearend and hasn't been touched

You mean '72, right? Because 72' is awful wide! (It's the "19" you drop to abbreviate, so that's where the ' goes ) Sorry for the grammar lesson, but so many do this it ain't funny.

I'd rebuild it. Did you want to just drop a used rear of unknown condition in risking possibly the same issue? '72 was the last year for trailing arms, if that's what you have (you didn't say which), so no later swap w/o mount modifications added to the mix. If you want a beefier rear, than alloy axles/c-clip eliminators give, there are many options, none are cheap, and all require mount modification

Didn't realize this was a grammar site. Thought it was for c10 trucks. I use talk to text so my phone typed the 72'. But I'm sure most on here understand what it was ment for. Thanks for the lesson

I would tend to think (from my experience) it's the carrier bearings that are bad........
I'd pull the cover and look carefully for shiny metal particles in the grease or inside the housing....the carrier isn't hard to get out.....

If you decide to go further........I and others here will talk you through the process if you want to do it.

Oh and I'm pretty sure most everyone understood the inference of your model year...and I don't think Special-K was trying to belittle you...just having some fun.......from what little I know about him, he's a knowledgeable guy....myself, I don't take internet and message board stuff too seriously....it's too easy to convey the wrong message with typed words....
