Re: Eric's 52' 1ton 4x4

Got a little done last night. I swapped the dually rear end in to place. Started labeling engine harness and removing parts from cab. Looks like a little more rust than i thought but still not too bad. I will have to repair or replace the upper cowl vent area, the lower lip of dash where key goes, ( rusted from cowl vent leaking) and the pass side floor pan. Im going to try and get the cab in place and mounted soon.

Re: Eric's 52' 1ton 4x4

Keep up the good work! I reused parts of my late model cab mounts in my build. If all goes well later today, I will be adding in the gussets to the rear mounts.

Re: Eric's 52' 1ton 4x4

Still need welded up. Looks like they will work. They are built out of 1/4 in plate. A little thicker than needed bu material was free.

Looks good! And, you can't go wrong with the thicker material. Solid is definitely a good thing when it comes to mounting the body.

Re: Eric's 52' 1ton 4x4

Thanks. I tend to have a problem with overkill.....
My goal is to try and have the cab mounted and front clip mocked up this weekend. We shall see. Seems like somthing always comes up.

Body on and front clip mocked up. Have to get creative with radiator or move engine back 5-6 in.

Have you thought about using an early Mustang radiator with an electric fan? Here's a link to a combo on eBay.

I used that radiator in a 54 truck with only minor metal work being required.

Re: Eric's 52' 1ton 4x4

Eric, how much room is there at the back of the motor? Is it possible to move it back a little, maybe an inch or two, without having to tear into the firewall? If you switch over to all electric fans, you can lose the clutch fan on the front of your engine and gain 3". This would leave you room for the radiator and a pusher fan or two on the front. You could get a two stage electric like Ford used on the Crown Vic's, Taurus, etc. Those things move a LOT of air in the "high" speed mode, somewhere around 4000 CFM if I remember correctly. They are very popular with the Jeep crawler guys. Low speed is for general cooling and high comes in to play via a thermostat switch, usually when the AC is on.

Eric, love the 4wd approach. I've got something in my mind like that for the future. Gotta get my first build off the ground first though, haha.

Good luck, keep us posted and pics coming.

Re: Eric's 52' 1ton 4x4

With the body sitting up high i can prob move the motor back 5-6 inches without cutting firewall. Ive decided i will slide the motor back. Its going to help with the inner fender clearence also.

Re: Eric's 52' 1ton 4x4

Eric, I ended up doing the same thing. It wasn't a big deal to move the motor mounts now and get everything situated where it needs to be. It was a lot less trouble than having to go to electric fans for everything. Don't get me wrong, an electric fan has its place, but if that is your only cooling and it goes out, you could be looking at a motor if it doesn't get caught in time.

Be sure to leave yourself about 2" of gap between the fan clutch hub and your radiator, that way the fan will move air through the radiator and out the shroud.
