clunking
I have an 06 silverado1500. Every time I hit the tiniest bump there is a clunking sound in the steering wheel. I took it to firestone and they said idler arm. I took it to les schwab and they found that the passenger side wire that gos to the electric shock was broken off. schwab said that it could either be the electric shock or the steering box. My question is would the shock make a clunking noise just because of the electrical wire being not connected?

Re: clunking
Could be the Intermediate Steering Shaft rattling/clunking.
To be sure...... Tie the Steering Wheel with the Seat Belt so it cant move & break the Clock Spring. Under the Hood where the steering shaft exits the firewall, There will be a 15mm headed bolt, Remove it. Separate the Intermediate & Lower Steering Shafts by pushing the Intermediate shaft toward the rear of the truck. Work the shaft in & out a good 20 times, This will redistribute the Grease in the Intermediate Steering shaft. Reassemble the shafts & test drive, If the noise is now gone....You found your issue, It WILL come back in 5-10,000 miles. You have a few options....Redo it every time the noise comes back, Install a grease Zerk in the shaft so you can re-grease with a gun, Or buy a replacement shaft from Borgeson http://www.borgeson.com/xcart/produc...ctid=1451&cat= Don't bother buying a GM one. |

Re: clunking
Thanks for the reply! I went to the dealership today. They had no clue what it could be, until an old guy mechanic was walking by and said almost exactly what you just said. I'm going to give it a try this weekend.

Re: clunking
This happened to me and my (then) new 2004 Silverado. Took it in once and the problem came back a short while later. Second time to the dealer, they fixed it for good. Not sure what they did, but that was 12 years and 80K miles ago.

Re: clunking
Same deal for '06 K2500HD? I have had a rattle in the front for some time now. I thought it was the disc brake calipers, but now I'm thinking it might be the steering shaft.

Re: clunking
I've owned 4 of these year trucks over the past 10 years. ALL of them did it at some point. I've always done the "remove the 15 bolt and stroke it" fix on all of them about once a year. Matter of fact, just did this exact thing to my Silverado SS daily driver on Sunday night.
It is a KNOWN issue with GM trucks, but GM has pretty much instructed dealerships to "play dumb" when it comes to it. It is not a safety issue, so they don't want to spend the money to issue a recall. |

Re: clunking
I removed the "center" 1 . 5mm bolt but nothing moves.
Is it the upper or lower shaft that is supposed to move, the one with the boot that goes to the R&P?
