Weatherstrip wont let doors close

Hey guys, I'm putting my 72 back together and replaced the weatherstrips with the channel/push on type rather than the glued type. Anyways, after installing the weatherstrips my doors wont close right, I have to slam the door with all my might to get it to close on the weatherstriping. Has anyone else had this issue? Any suggestions?

Just about everyone that has put on the slip on weatherstrips has that problem. Especially if the door fits a little tight to begin with.

Try moving the striker plate out a bit. Be sure and mark around it with a fine felt tip marker first so you can tell how far you have moved it. Only go about 1/16" at a time and don't let it move up or down, just out.

So you pretty much have to sacrifice your door lining up right?

Do they eventually wear in having the doors shut over a while?

Don't know if it's recommended, but I plan on baking mine in the sun some before install. If yours are clip-on, pull em and give that a try. Other than that, Doc knows these trucks very well. If you have the space and latch plate shims, add one top and bottom, see what happens.

I replaced mine a few weeks ago and talked to others that have had the same problem, they will eventually squash some and relieve so its not so hard to close but you need to adjust the door striker so the exterior of the door is flush with cab.

Re: Weatherstrip wont let doors close

I always specify SoftSeal, with their motto being something like "stop SLAMMING that door", and they close perfectly. I think it definitely depends on the material being used to make the seal.

I've always been very happy with it on every restoration I've used it on so far! No slamming, no closing twice, no moving the door out...

I got my seals from gmcpaul

my doors do close flush to the exterior already but I have to slam them with all my body weight behind it for them to latch properly

Re: Weatherstrip wont let doors close

I replaced mine with newer clip-on style about 2 years ago and they are just now beginning to soften. Wish I would have known about the "soft seals".

I may still switch. I had to move my strike plate out so the doors never look completely closed.

Do they clip on?
