Inner wheel bearing
I am replacing the front wheel bearings on my 64 c10 with standard drums. I got the
Timken bearings from Rockauto. The spindle is 1.375 and the inner bearing id is 1.372. It won't slide on the spindle. Is this normal? Is the bearing supposed to be a tight fit? My shop manuals don't indicate anything about this. Help Please? Thanks! P.S. I did search for this issue but found nothing. |

Re: Inner wheel bearing
I can't help you much on the subject accept that the bearing should be a sliding fit.
You impressed the hell out of me when you said you have a shop manual.

Re: Inner wheel bearing
You confirmed what I thought. A sliding fit. I guess I will try another set of bearings. Thanks!

Re: Inner wheel bearing
if you look at the specs for lm48548 the id is 1.375 which would be correct for a zero fit. i would question how you got the 1.372

Re: Inner wheel bearing
I measured the spindle and the bearing after I tried to mount the fully assembled hub. I removed the seal and measured the bearing and the spindle with a micrometer. The package the bearing came in was labeled Set 5, which is the correct bearing.
I also tried to slide just the bearing onto the spndel. No go. |

Re: Inner wheel bearing
I take it the old bearing came off easily? ck for any burs or nicks on the spindle. Maybe just a bad new bearing?

Re: Inner wheel bearing
Well, this is a little embarrassing. After cleaning my glasses and using a magnifying glass and being very careful, I got 1.375 for the id. The bearing number is LM 48548. So the correct bearing.
I still could not get it on, until I polished the spindle extensively with emery cloth. Now I can get the bearing on sometimes. Sometimes it gets stuck. If I can get it past the taper on the spindle, it has plenty of clearance. I will have to be lucky to get the whole hub assembly on. I will try tomorrow. Thanks everyone for your help. |
