1966 C10 Drumbrake Spindle damage
Hello Guyes,
i restore my 1966 Chevy c10 and put my Spindle out of the Rotor and see some scratches on the Spindle Shaft. Now i am a little bit afraid because i dont wand to take this Spindles back if it could maybe break. I am searching for some new Spindles, but i only found some for Disc Brake Set up. I need some Spindles for the Drum Brake Set up. I think about to change with disc brake in the front, but then i need a set of new Wheels, because the Calipers dont fit with the old 6 Lug Wheels of my Truck. Its to expensive for me now. I the Future maybe in 2-3 Years its ok. What do you think about my Spidles ? Where can a buy some new Spindles for my Drum Brake Set up with the old backplate ? Thank you all verry much. Greetings from Germany Nils |

The areas that the inner bearing races contact look fine.

You should be fine. That's not too bad and the areas where the bearing races go look to be in good shape.

Re: 1966 C10 Drumbrake Spindle damage
It looks like the threaded section was welded to the rest of the spindle. I wouldn't be concerned with the scratches on the taper, they look like tooling marks from it being machined on a lathe and the tool chattering. What looks like a weld is a little concerning though. If it has been welded, you never know how long it will last since that piece is heat treated and weld doesn't stick that well.

Re: 1966 C10 Drumbrake Spindle damage
Well if you wanted to be sure you could sand down the roughed up areas with emery cloth finishing up with about 400 grit, check for cracks with a 10X magnifier or if you want to throw some money at them have them magna-fluxed followed by shot peening. For shot peening you would want to protect the machined finishes with a rubber tape.
Much easier to find a spare set. |

I agree that the spindle looks fine. You might smooth it up a little with some fine sandpaper, but I think it will be fine.

That's not quite so easy in Germany.
