Throttle sticking

The throttle is sticking on my 69 with a 400 small block. I recently changed to a new Holley and it is still sticking (not the reason for the new carb). Being a 69, my gas peddle is fastened to the floor and a metal rod goes through the firewall. I've custom made a rod with hiem joints (pictured).

Some people have told me the hie ms are locking up and causing it to stick. But I've noticed when it sticks, I can pull up the rubber peddle and the idle falls right back.

Has anyone had the problem of a stiff rubber peddle causing the throttle to hang? If so, how do you wear it in?

Put a stiffer return spring and lube the pedal with white lithium and the heims with wd40

I had similar problem. my linkage was hanging up on the air cleaner. I put a spacer on carb and that fixed mine. you might get some nylon locking nuts to put on your connections so you can loosen them up without them coming off.

I'd put a stiffer return spring on there for starters.

Your tv cable should be on a special bracket bolted to the linkage for correct geometry or you could damage the trans. If you're running a 700r4

The washers on the outboard side of the heim joint might be binding it - I think I am seeing how the inboard side bushing is tapered but the stack of washers on the other side of the joint look like they could bind the heim if it rotates.

But what trac209 said sounds worth checking - I do know that the angle and position of that kickdown linkage is critical so I would agree with double checking your kickdown set up and how it is interacting with your throttle. I only have experience with the TH350 and Holley 4160 though.

Actually I was focusing on the carb end - I just noticed that your accelerator pedal arm connection to the heim is loaded in single shear.

if there is a sideways load there it could also bind the heim at that end.

Here is a photo - using a double shear loading design on that end could maybe soak up more of the axial load enough to prevent binding..(if that is where the binding is originating) - I still would rule out the kickdown first

Also, even before all of the above - looking at your first photo - there is almost no tension at all on the throttle springs - I think I would suggest trying to add a mounting tab on a manifold bolt to get a little less than 1/4 of the spring tension when the throttle is closed.

The tv cable isn't a kickdown,it controls line pressure and if the geometry on the cable is wrong it will do damage to the trans. For hooking to a Holley carb there is a special bracket that corrects the geometry so it will work properly.
