235 Open pipes? Glass packs?
So I am running my duals now. Before my IFS upgrade I had duals out the back with flow masters. Now, I am running the pipes side by side and exiting thru drivers running board. Thought on open pipe, glass packs? Short or long glass packs? Thanks!

Re: 235 Open pipes? Glass packs?
From experience of driving my 48, a 64 and my 71 with pipes that exit in front of the wheel they get real tiresome driving on the road for any real length of time. Fun to hear them bark on short runs but the drone will bug the daylights out of you along with giving you a headache on road trips.
The 48 still has a glasspack of sorts with a pipe exiting in front of the left rear wheel and the other two had loud glass packs with pipes (the same muffler and pipes on both trucks as I caught the engine on fire in the 64 and had too much fire damage to make it worth fixing and pulled the pipes off it and put them on my 71 after I put an engine in it. I drove the 48 as much as 45 miles one way to work and drove the 71 23 miles one way to work for several years with those pipes, sounded great against the Johnson barriers though. After 20 = years of that I want pipes clear out the back and reasonable but sweet sounding mufflers. I guess you could start out running straight pipes out the sides and could easily cut the pipe and put a muffler in if it is too loud to live with an if you put the bend far enough back you will just have to cut it off in front of the bend and run tail pipes out the back and not loose that much of the pipe in the process. That way you can find your happy with it level.

Re: 235 Open pipes? Glass packs?
I had a 52 Chevy with a 216. When I bought it the muffler was about to fall off so I took a sawsall to it. With straight pipes it sounded kind of cool at idle but was just lout an obnoxious off idle.
I ended up putting duals with Smithies on it all the way out the back. The glass packs were pretty tame with little to no in car noise, which I missed a little, but it had what I thought was a really good tone going down the road. Here's what my 30 in. Smithies sounded like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBI_QYScF_k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVyEK6auiKs |

Here's how it sounds after. My father's last drive in it before it went under restoration.

Re: 235 Open pipes? Glass packs?
Nothing sounds like a V8 so forget trying to go there with straight pipes.
Here's my 1969 442 400 big block with 10:1 stock motor and true dual exhaust...quite the difference! https://youtu.be/0IMvX5z5E9k

Re: 235 Open pipes? Glass packs?
Thanks all,
Mr 48 / yes, I like dual out the backs too. Probably going to do that. I was just curious to find out difference with open pipes. I may add in later as you mentioned. Foot Stomper / Yes, I know its not a v8 and will never sound like one! I have my 56 for that sound! Had it out Sunday burnin the streets...just like the distinct rat tat tat sound of the 6. Chevman, thanks for the pic, Nice! Before I started rebuilding, I had duals out back with flowmasters, sounded good. Mufflers are just too big to use now for what I am doing. Sound is here... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vIp82c2ABE

Re: 235 Open pipes? Glass packs?
My father has been driving the 59 since 1972 with 4 foot stacks (about 2 inch diameter) up behind the cab with Thrush mufflers.
It wasn't to my liking when he gave it to me because of the looks mostly. The sound was pretty decent however. There was only one bend in pipe after the mufflers. The 261 was also equipped with a home built split exhaust manifold. Hope this helps.https://goo.gl/photos/QDQPhtiwSG5ySMJX7

Re: 235 Open pipes? Glass packs?
If memory serves, way back on Trucks they did duals out the side w/glass packs w/ their 235. You could find the old shakedown video and see how its sounds
