Wire loom question / opinion

I have purchased an American Autowire complete update harness and really want some high quality loom for the wires which are exposed under the cab and bed . I don't want the split loom cheap stuff as I don't like the look or the performance of it. Please give me some ideas and good places to procure the best quality product.

Re: Wire loom question / opinion

All split loom is not made alike. Nylon and polypropylene last much longer and can handle higher temperature. You can also get braided loom which is harder to run wires through but looks a little more appropriate under the hood imo. Heat shrink fabric loom looks closer to original but costs plenty more. And there's always reproduction asphalt cloth loom for a truly vintage look.

I have seen unsplit industrial loom that had locking ends installed but have no idea where to get it. The reproduction asphalt will look out of place on my truck as it has been modified .

Re: Wire loom question / opinion

I used a good quality split loom and insulated clamps up inside the frame rails out of sight. If there's ever a problem with the wiring I can easily slip the wires out of the loom and check them out. Can't do that when you wrap them all up or use some kind of covering. NAPA sells the good stuff in different sizes by the foot.

If your doing a full restoration, then you'd want something more period correct.

Re: Wire loom question / opinion

I used a product similar to this purchased off of Ebay. In some areas where I had a lot of wires spliting off I used the black poly spiral. Before I used the split ribbed stuff but it is a PITA to keep clean.

Not with no-name generic tape, will crack and unravel. Use UL listed for gas-oil environment.

Re: Wire loom question / opinion

If you want to wrap the harness with black wrap the correct material is available. You might have to search for it but it is not tape. It seems to be thicker and it is not sticky like tape. Like OrrieG said, typical black electrical tape that you commonly find is not suitable to use where it is subjected to high temperature, like under the hood.

Re: Wire loom question / opinion

That tape is actually called "non adhesive harness tape." It's also available in cloth if your harness is old enough to need it.

I buy split loom from http://www.waytekwire.com.
Everything they carry is high quality and the prices are good too.

Re: Wire loom question / opinion

I've used it.
Good for weather but not oil or gas.

I don't know of any adhesive electrical tape that would hold up to oil or gas,

Adhesive lined heat-shrink tubing would be oil resistant I would think. I doubt it would be for gas very much. Probably worse if the gas has ethanol in it.

Best practice would be not to get oil or gas on your wiring.

Re: Wire loom question / opinion

Self-vulcanizing repair tape (Wikipedia calls it "Self Amalgamating" )is fuel resistant but spendy and doen't really look original.
