OT: 2001 Duramax

I'm looking at a 2001 Chevy duramax diesel 3/4 4x4, it has 90k on it, the transfer went out and they are installing a new GM one. How are these motors, I was just curious with that many miles on it? Thanks Randy

At the dealership where I work, we've only done anything major (injector) to one Duramax. I think that they are really good engines.

I can't help you out with your question but I purchased an '04 of what you are looking at with a crew cab and a short box. So far, I love this truck! BTW, the literature that is out on the Duramax states that it is designed for a life of 200k miles.

Randy, Love mine, had some major problems early, but gm took care of me. But, a landscape guy here in alma has a 2001 chevy that has had problems since day one. His has right at 100k on it, and he told me that it burns 1 qt of oil every 500 miles. Gm states that for them to buy it back, or put a new motor in it, it has to be burning 1 qt every 100 miles. I'd check it out really well before buying it. Is it at a dealership or an individual?

THANKS guys for the input. David, its a used car place by the golf course. I'm kind of skeptical about it with the 90K on it already. Thanks Randy

I have an 01, 02 ,and 03 trucks with the Duramax/Allison combo. Only problems I've had with all 3 trucks was with the injectors. The 01 and 02 have over 150k on them. The 03 has 90k.

My son works at the DMAX plant in Dayton,Ohio...I've never heard him talk about these engines in a negative way. He keeps trying to talk me into buying one. He keeps saying these are "bad" engines...which in his language means they are good engines?
I told him he had a choice...I could sell my 70cst and then maybe look at buying a Chevy with a Dmax engine...or...keep the "Circuit Rider"...he thought for about a half of sec and said...keep the 70cst.

Randy,

My 03 only has about 12k miles right now, but not a single problem. I've heard that some of the early motors had issues with the head gaskets. 've also heard GM has been real good about taking care of them. 90k really isn't a lot of miles for a diesel.

I have a friend that has one and it is a very smooth truck. It rides smooth, the Alison tranny shifts very smooth. Add a Quadzilla programmer and some 4 inch exhaust and you have yourself a tire smoking hotrod.

Randy, I have had 3 of these Duramax's and love them. I have a programer on the 03 and you wouldn't believe how they will run!! I wouldn't go back to a gas motor for nothing!!

Joe, what type of programer did you go with? Do you have problems with the tranny slipping with all the extra power? How much hp/torque did you gain?

Thanks
David

I have a Hypertech programmer and I haven't had any tranny problems. It adds 96hp and 163 torque (or close) I have a Bully dog air intake box for it (not installed) and want to change the exhaust also. Has any one done an air cleaner box and exhaust with the Hypertech???

Thanks guys!!!!!! I appreciate all the info. He's wanting $6000 and my 2000 Z-71 LT with 62K on it. I think he's a bit high. I'd be going up a year, 3/4 and Duramax but losing 30K in miles and the leather int. I'm still thinking I think I got my 72 sold, I'll know this weekend and if I do I'll go try to deal with him on the Duramax. Thanks Randy
