Parts value and ?'s

Just looked at a 68 3/4 ton 2wd. Engine is 350 4bbl, turbo 400 tranny, and 3:73 posi-traction. First of all, does this set-up seem correct for a 68? Next question, The rear end looking from behind is just a big round cover with 10 bolts around the cover and a drain plug about half way up the cover. According to the glovebox tag it reads Posi traction axle in one spot, and 3:73 gears in another spot. What kind of rear is this, and what is it worth? Any input is good. Thanks...

By your description the rear end sounds like the Eaton 3/4 ton FF axle. Some things I've not heard of though. The Eaton didn't come with a 3.73 as far I as know. Lowest ratio was a 4.10. But you never know. And with posi also.
Same again... as far as I know the 350 wasn't available in 68. Let us know what you find out anyways.

truck

I didn't think the 350 came out until 1969. But, I could be wrong.

It should have come with a 327 engine, not sure about the rear end.

I thought that the 350's first year in our trucks was 69, but not positive.

Good luck

He told me it is a 68, and definately has a 68 front clip on it. I could not read the vin in the glovebox, but could read where it said 350 engine. It also said chevrolet custom on the outside of the glovebox door like a 69 and newer. Possible to be a late 68? Still wondering about the rear end also.

Could it possibly be a mismatched glove box door?

No 350 in 68 and a 3/4 ton rear would either be 4:10 or 4:56 dana or Corp, unless BB auto, then it's a 3:54 dana.

The glove box door seemed to match everything on the truck. Only other option is someone added a different front clip at one time. The guy that has it now has owned it for over 20 years. Even if the clip was changed, the 3:73 should still be original. Odometer reads 77K Which could be actual judging by the rest of the truck, however, i know it was painted at one time long ago.

There are no full floater 3:73 rears I know of between 67-72. Are you sure it's a 3/4 ton? 3:73 is a half ton rear ratio.

The diff does not look like any half ton stuff that i have. It has dog dish hub caps on it so i couldn't see how many lug nuts it had. It had tall narrow bias tires with 16.5 split rims on it. The diff cover was round and smooth.(other than drain plug)
