axle seats

anyone had to do the axle seats when switching out their rearends? I am installing a stock 1981 gm 10 bolt [axle seats run parallel to the frame] in place of my stock 1966 gm 12 bolt [axle seats run parallel to the trailing arms]. the 12 bolt is 6 lug and I have the 10 bolt so pretty serious cost savings not getting replacement axles to get the 5 lug pattern we all strive for. I'm hoping I can install the 10 bolt with the new axle seats and land in the proper position with out too much fuss. I will be hanging on to the 12 bolt and will probably ad posi and the 5 lug axles later in time. hints and tricks to all out proper install advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm flying solo and just going to common sense it in. my only concern is I do see some weeping or leaking where the tubes go into the pumpkin on the 10 bolt. of course the 12 bolt is dry as a bone. thanks for looking and cheers to all.

This isn't a cause for great concern as weeping around the tubes can be pretty common. You don't want to just put it in though. It can be a sign of abuse and the tubes no longer aligned with each other or the pumpkin. Call around to local driveline shops and ask them if they have an axle alignment tool. They will be ale to make sure your tubes and pumpkin are aligned and do a complete perimeter weld to ensure they don't move and/or weep again.
