PS/Alt belt routing

I'm installing the CPP power steering kit onto a '62 with a 327. Mounted the Alt with an aftermarket bracket that uses the header bolts on the number one cylinder, so the PS pump and Alt are both on the left side of the engine. Having a hard time finding a combination of pulleys and belt routing that will work with this set up. Main problem is the PS pump is in the way of a clean belt run from the crank pulley up to the Alt pulley. Any suggestions and/or photos of some ways to accomplish this would be appreciated.

Re: PS/Alt belt routing

I don't have a pic but with the short water pump, the alternator belt is supposed to be on the pulley groove closest to the harmonic balancer. Then the power steering pump belt should be in the 3rd groove out and only around the crank pulley. It looks like your crank pulley has only 2 grooves. You need 3. I don't know what pump, brackets and pulley you have there, but it is not correct. The pulley is likely for a long water pump.

Re: PS/Alt belt routing

Thanks a million for setting me on the right track. After reading what you wrote, I took another look at the pulleys on my engine. It looks like the PS pump pully should be a single groove, to make room so the Alt belt can run up behind it. Is that correct?

Like this? (wish this was my engine!)

Yes, that configuration is correct. I agree that you will likely need a single groove PS pump pulley. With what you currently have, you could run double belts on the alternator if you added a double groove pulley to the alternator.

Re: PS/Alt belt routing

If I remember right the crank pulley was a two piece arrangement for the short pump, a two groove pulley & a single to go with it. That sound right?

Re: PS/Alt belt routing

Yes that is typically what was used. Either a single or double groove pulley up against the balancer and then an add on single groove pulley for power steering. There were some different style pulleys used in the late '60's and early '70's, some of which were cast iron.

Re: PS/Alt belt routing

Mine has the double pulley on the power steering. One belt goes to the balancer. The other belt goes from the balancer, partially wraps the power steering and then the alternator and water pump. Balancer has 3 groove pulley. This setup was on the truck when I got it.

Re: PS/Alt belt routing

You also have a long water pump. The OP has a short water pump. All trucks '72 and earlier came with short water pumps on the V8's originally.

Re: PS/Alt belt routing

Is it easier and/or better to set up the PS with a long pump?
