97 Z -71 Swb half ton towing capacity

Will a 97 Z71 swb half ton with 5.7 vortec with rear air bag load levelers and trailer breaks safely tow an 8000lbs camper?

That sounds like a lot for a 1/2 tone truck. IT has the power to do it, but even with trailer brakes, I'd say that is a lot with the Z71 brakes & suspension.

Re: 97 Z -71 Swb half ton towing capacity

I just picked up a CCSB 3/4 ton, 350/4l80/3.73, guy that I bought it from towed a camper. He told me the tow capacity was 5-6k, and was about that the limit of the truck. I haven't checked the numbers, but if a 3/4 ton has that capacity then a 1/2 ton is less than that. If not just the power, it's the tranny and the breaking that limits it.

Not according to GM -

6500 pounds with 800 pound tongue weight max.

I couldn't find a CCSB listed for 3/4 tons but an extended cab model is listed at 7000 pounds with 3.73 gears.

At 5k+ I'd be more worried about the 4L60e, they don't handle abuse very well. I would put the biggest cooler you can find on it, and make sure your brakes are in fantastic condition...or switch to hydroboost.
