Does this Column saver save from cutting original column?

I have what I thought was the complete kit however it looks like I will need this. My question is "does this part save cutting the original column? I assume I'll need collapsible intermediate with U joints as well.

that picture is of a complete column the aluminum at the bottom is the column saver and yes you cut the old column off the gear box and insert that parts so it has a lower bearing

Says it can't be used with the column shifter. Nothing is ever easy.

Not sure what you are trying to do? install power steering? but will have to cut original column.

It should work stock with column shift , check out post #29 in Chuck Drivers build pictures
he used a van column but same concept, as you would only be modifying the bottom section of the column, past the linkage.
http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...=334552&page=2

I bought a bearing and installed it in the lower stock column, only cost $5, a little time and a little tack welding, nothing complicated
http://www.ebay.com/itm/400073192177...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Earlier Post:
Just finished installing a lower bearing in my stock column to use with on my Camaro clip, I bought 2 qty-R12zz bearings for $6 delivered off EBay, Actually only needed 1(+1 spare)
I cut the stock column and shaft off almost flush with the gear box
I then cut the tapered part of the column off so I have about 1 1/2" of shaft extended
the bearing is .030 larger than the ID of the column so I cut 4 slits in the end of the column and bent each tab of the column out slightly to accept the bearing.
I then welded a 7/8" washer on the end of the column and welded up the slits and ground smooth. Just had to weld slow not to overheat the bearing.
Simple & smooth $3 solution , No need for a $70-$80 column bearing saver.

The way that reads is you remove the steering shaft and cut the column to length and slip that setup inside the old column. A slick setup if you like the billet piece at the top.

I spent the last several minutes searching for a set of instructions and apparently there are none on line. Those guys have some nice stuff for us but I pull a hand full of hair out every time I try to navigate the mess they call a website and catalog.

Yes, I purchased the complete kit from Summit. Didn't realize the shaft needed to be cut at time of purchase. http://www.classicperform.com/Store/...59PSK-S500.htm

Re: Does this Column saver save from cutting original column?

The column saver kit has a flat "pancake" bearing at the bottom with a locking sleeve that you adjust to your column length. It makes the steering shaft turn smoothly and maintains the proper spacing for the steering wheel, turn signals, and horn components. I used one when I modified my column in my TF and thought it was worth the cost.

Re: Does this Column saver save from cutting original column?

I like the product. The description says not to use with the column shift, so I want to see what others might have done to retain both original steering column in cab and the 3 on the tree before I buy this one.

it can't be used with a column that has an internal shift tube 1960 up, Yours has an external shift so it can be used as long as you cut the column below the shift lever box that screws to the column.

Great. Thanks for the confirmation. I was staring at my firewall and crawling under the frame saying to myself that column saver will work.

Re: Does this Column saver save from cutting original column?

I have a TF so not exactly like what you have but probably very similar. It is a little tight but not really difficult at all. The shifter box and arms stay in their original location and I cut my column as short as possible thinking that it would give a little better angle on the universal joints.

Russell, that looks great. Did you remove the whole shaft before cutting? I plan to remove mine for cutting.

Yes, I had it in and out a few times while working on it. I decided where I wanted to cut the housing and cut it first. Then I put the shaft back in and measured where to cut it allowing for the length of the column saver end piece and the length needed for the flat that you make for the universal joint. It's been about four years since I did mine, but if my memory is correct the bearing sever kit comes with good instructions on setting the flat bearing so that the shaft spins freely in the housing. It's not difficult at all, and as the old saying goes, measure twice and cut once.
