Pitman arm and tie rod end - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi to all.
I will be replacing the pitman arm and the tie rod end inner driver side today. Does any body have any tips before I start.

If your pitman arm does like mine did and seperates then you will need two forks to get it off

And count the threads or turns on the tie rod to make sure you get the new one close. Good Luck!!

Take a peice of masking tape and mark the thread of the old tie rod end before you remove it from the sleeve....or count threads...then match it up to the new one and tape that too....thats about it.

Use a pitman puller to get it off the steering box. Clean up that end nut, and be prepared to torque the hell out of it when you put it back on. I think the Haynes book has you torque it above 230 ft-lbs if I'm not mistaken. You might want to check.

Guys thanks for the info. but I'm having a hard time removing the pitman arm from the steering box. I got a loaner tool from autozone, a pitman arm wedger but its not working. Is there another tool that I can use?

Thanks for all your help. Success, I was able to replace all the parts without any problems once I got the right tool. Damn everything is nice and tight. Next project is installing the sway bar.
