Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion

Ya, can completely understand the family obligation deal, that's part of the reason its takes me so long to reply.

Good looking truck BTW.

Got a few questions for ya.

I read thru the thread and there was some brief conversation on wiring up the stock vp44, but am still confused. Not sure if you can shed some more light on how it should be wired up.

I was gonna pull the harness off mine, lay it out on the floor, and snap a picture to hopefully help the cause. I got my motor from a wrecking yard so its fairly complete up to the fuse panel and hydroboost braking system.

The other question is that I am running a 47re, will I need a controller similar to the one your using?

The help is much appreciated.

Pics are of my attempt to place the engine on stand, need to replace oil pan as it got smash at the wrecking yard. Just gonna do it on the cherry picker

Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion

84 Beast - I responded on your Cummins Help thread on how to wire up your VP44 fuel pump relay.

I just realized that I didn't give you the internal regulator part number if you decided to go with the first gen. alternator. The part number for it is: C8315 or IN8315 depending on what brand you buy. Good luck with your project and thanks for the compliment.

Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion

Here is some information on the wiring to wire in a relay to the VP44 pump to make it start up and run. On the rear of the engine, up near the valve cover, are two quick connect plugs. One has 11 wires and the other has 14 wires. These two plugs are the main wires that I used for my build. I did have to tap into the Injection Pump harness for a Throttle Position signal for my PCS transmission controller.

Purchase a 12 volt relay and the wiring pigtail that fits it.

Connect a fused (5amp) and switched 12V power source to the #1 pin (Green with black tracer) on the 11 pin connector. This is Ignition switch signal.

Connect a constant 12V supply to the #3 pin (Red with white tracer) on the 11 pin connector.

Connect the 87 terminal on the relay to the #7 pin (Red with Light Green) on the 11 pin connector.

Connect the 86 terminal on the relay to the #8 pin (Brown and white) on the 11 pin connector.

Connect the 85 terminal on the relay to negative/ground

Connect the 30 terminal on the relay to positive/12volt

After that, if you have the fuel hooked up and the starter hooked up you can just turn on your VP44 switch and then the jump the starter solenoid to fire it up. Turning off the VP44 switch (pin 1) will shut it off.

I tried to attach some PDF files that show all this but they were too large. PM me your e-mail address and I can try and send them to you direct. Hope this helps you and anyone else that has a 24 valve VP44 project.

Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion

This post comes with sadness and joy. I have sold my 1989 and hauled it to it's new owner last week. The trip down there was filled with some nasty weather. We barely missed a hail storm just east of Denver and in SE Colorado we passed through the aftermath of high wind and/or a twister.

Diesel Wrencher - I posted the Ford pic after reading the comments on your post. lol

Four semis and a travel trailer blown over. My boy got a picture with a small twister coming off the edge of storm cloud.

Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion

And here is what I hauled back. A '96 12V P-pump, NV4500, 2wd single cable and an extra first gen 12V with an Automatic transmission for a 4wd. The extra engine was welded to the back of the frame and caused a few people to do a double take.

The new owner of my '89 is a forum member but I'm not sure that he will post anymore information on it.

Yep, that's the plan. I will have to post in the "Alternate Tinkering" section since it's an International. I am picking up a one owner 1981 GMC Jimmy 4x4 in the next couple of days and see if my boy has any interest in it. So, I may have two projects going.

I would just post it in here. I've put ford swaps in here.

You tell someone from Texas that it came from the factory with A/C delete & they look at you like you're speaking Chinese!
