Grade 5, stailess with lock washers. I double nut mine, but I am kinda anal about hitches and hate the fact that anyone can tow anything with what ever they drive. (How often do you see ppl overloading there S-10 or what ever with a heavy ass load hooked to a rusty step bumper? )

Grade 8 has a great clamping ability, but its shear strenght is not very good.
Basicly, it is brittle if given side to side loads and can shatter.
OI would not weld on that thing either, the hitch companies warn against any welding on there products.

Yup, NAPA is who stocks our bolt bins.
I would go with the largest diameter that'll fit in the hole.

The hitch bolts are usually 1/2'' coarse and grade 5. Don't forget the flat and lock washers

yeah i made that hitch at school. only cost me $10. i only had to pay for the tube i used for the cross member the rest was scrap and we can use that for free. i welded it to the frame but i also wanted to put a couple bolts in each side just for a little extra strength not that it needs any. so i should be alright with 1/2 grade 5 bolts.
