My 61 swb project

Hello all, I'm new to the thread but very familiar with the site for quite some time. I picked up this little pickup about a year ago out in Fort Worth, TX. Three on the tree with 235 engine, planning to keep it that way... for now. I'm in the process of doing a little bit of everything with this truck as it needs a lot of work to get it back on the road, but here's a shot from when I first got ahold of it.

Re: My 61 swb project

Good looking 61! Im glad that you are planning on keeping the 235 and three speed. I kept mine and I get plenty of comments when I go to shows and cruise-ins. Looks like it's in good shape and won't take much to get it going. I added a big cam and two carbs and now it will run 75 down the road easy!

X2 with 62 Barnfind.

Glad your keeping the 235.
Kept the 292 in my 66 and had some fun with the insides. Anyhow, nice truck to start with!

Re: My 61 swb project

Here's some fairly recent pics under the hood after I got ahold of some fenton headers. Anyone else out there running fentons with stock manifold and 1 barrel carb? I've come across some clearance issues with the rods. Ive heard about some bending their rods and others going through lokar as an alternative. I'm trying to get by with this manifold and carb setup for the meantime, still trying to decide between upgrading to an offenhauser mani with 2 barrel or "tricking it out" with a triple carb setup. Any tips or advice is welcomed!

Re: My 61 swb project

Starting to look good! I have an Offenhauser duel intake on my 235 and I love it! I didn't add the manifolds yet but I sure want to. With Fenton exhaust you will have to get a Fenton intake to prevent clearance problems. I Tom Langdon at Langdon's stove bolt and he told me this. Before you decide I would call him and get his advice on what you are wanting to do. I would recommend running duel two barrels on on your engine. When mine warms up it has plenty of torque and power plus it looks cool. You will get a lot of looks and comments on the engine when you show it or go to a cruise in. Here is some pics of my 235.

Re: My 61 swb project

Im excited to see what you do with the throttle linkage. I have the same intake manifold and had to make some crappy brackets and run a cable. I dont really like it.

Re: My 61 swb project

A little Sunday Funday with the truck today. I had an extra brake line lying around and used it to do a mock up of the throttle linkage. Luckily I scored a dual carb linkage kit for dirt cheap along with some other goodies at local Swap Meet yesterday. Definitely a trial & error project but it was a fun process.

Re: My 61 swb project

Hello all! Finally got around to getting out those old u-joints and putting the driveshaft back in yesterday and was planning on changing out the fluid on the rear end. I ordered a diff cover from lmc (part#38-1809) and when I tried to compare, it was significantly smaller. I only saw lmc had one available with 10 bolt for this year (1961). As far as I am aware rear end hasn't been changed. Any tips on how to identify?

Re: My 61 swb project

Why are you needing a new cover? That one looks just fine. That differential should be a Eaton HO32/33.

Re: My 61 swb project

Thanks Captainfab! I was looking to clean up the rear end a little more and paint it. Figured I'd throw on a chrome cover for looks since I was already pulling it off, but Ill probably keep the original so I can move onto something else on the truck.

Re: My 61 swb project

No one makes an aftermarket chrome cover for the Eaton HO32/33. If you really want a chrome cover, you will have to pull the original off and have it chromed. Not many people mess with those old diffs anymore.

Re: My 61 swb project

After much procrastination, I finally got around to putting the front brakes back together. When putting on the new spindle nuts I noticed the washers were different sizes, along with the dust caps. This truck still had ball type bearings on driver side, while the passenger had tapered wheel bearings which seemed a little odd. Could it be possible the passenger side was switched out from a later model being that it didn't have the ball bearings inside? Driver side dust cap measured 1 3/4 in. & passenger measured 2 in. diameter. Here's a couple pics.
