Shaved Door Handle back to Stock Question
I have a cherry set of doors that came with my truck but, the door handles have been shaved. I originally planned on keeping the shaved handles but, I have decided I actually prefer the look of some exterior trim such as door handles. Anyway, Can I just drill holes for the stock handles or will the area around them crack since from the factory there was a small indentation? Maybe I should just try selling my doors and trying to find a cherry set with stock handles.

Re: Shaved Door Handle back to Stock Question
Probably depends on how much plastic they used on the outside. a look at the back should tell you if the metal was installed flush or recessed.

The holes were welded up flush. I have a feeling the slight indentation the factory stamped there was enough to keep them from fatiguing. Another option would be those Kindig it door handles.

Re: Shaved Door Handle back to Stock Question
Helo those kindigits look slick but dang are they pricey...like stated depending on how it was patched means a mess could be made trying to get back to original..or you could get lucky....you might put your feelers out and see if someone had a good set of doors that wanted shaved doors..you never know...

Re: Shaved Door Handle back to Stock Question
Quick, easy and permanent solution: Get a pair of cheapo junk doors, cut out the handle mounting area and weld back into your doors like you would any patch panel. Measure carefully to get the precise location of course!

Re: Shaved Door Handle back to Stock Question
This is an idea I've toyed with but, I'm having a heck of a time finding doors that fit that bill.

Re: Shaved Door Handle back to Stock Question
If I would get my butt in gear I'd have the back few inches of a pair of doors that one could cut the patches out of.
Basically I am cutting two doors for each side in two vertically to stretch the doors 9-1/4 inches but I haven't cut them yet. They will be 47/50 doors that the left over pieces are from. I'd think you can find a pair of dead doors with just that area still good with a bit of hunting or someone else may already have them in the scrap pile.

Re: Shaved Door Handle back to Stock Question
Good point, it may not be as hard to deal with as it looks. A lot of guys mud stuff up rather than doing it right.
I don't think I'd want to put and add out on Craigslist as someone will still want far too much money just because they think you are desperate. Check out adds listing a bunch of parts and ask if they have any damaged doors that can be used to patch yours. The offer still stands on the ones I have and that will only cost you the price of getting them to you . I've just got to figure out what doors I want to cut up to make my extended doors but I am leaving for two weeks on my sailboat in a few hours. Speaking of that if there are any members in Port Townsend area stop by Port Hudson Marina over the weekend. I'll be on Sea Dragon in the first slip on the north side.

Might see if paulspickupparts has any junk doors. I've bought a couple different sheet metal pieces from him.

Re: Shaved Door Handle back to Stock Question
I found two pair of single window doors in less than two weeks. Granted, the southwest probably offers more rust free options, but paid no more than 100 each. The best ones cost me 50 and 60 each.

Re: Shaved Door Handle back to Stock Question
They were professionally shaved with metal. I have been scrounging craigslist and put a few feelers out there to see what I come up with. I'm in no rush at this point either as work is dragging me down to Oregon tomorrow for two weeks.

Re: Shaved Door Handle back to Stock Question
When ever you see doors advertised get a hold of them and ask them if they have junk ones. Just because they aren't advertising them doesn't mean they don't have them.
