Push vs Pull inside door handles?

My '50 has one inside door control that requires you to pull it to open the door (bar attachment on top), while the other side requires that you push it to open (bar attachment on bottom). A little research reveals that Chevy made this change in the early years of production, but the exact date seems a mystery. Clearly, one of mine has been replaced, but which one?

For obvious reasons I'd like to make mine both operate the same direction. Which is right for a 1950? Is the Push style available in reproduction or will I have to look for used?

Re: Push vs Pull inside door handles?

interesting question. on my 49 the arms from the handle to the latch are under the handle. with the handle pointing down it requires you to pull back to open the door & push forward to lock it. seems like you may have 2 controls for the same side door.

47 and 48 you pushed the handle away to open the door.

At first I suspected that too. But on one side the connecting bar is at the top (pull style) the other side it's at the bottom (push style). So they are different.

This configuration aligns the connecting bar horizontally in it's track. The pull style routes the connecting bar at an upward angle, necessitating rubber bumpers under the cardboard door panels for clearance. Makes you wonder why Chevy changed it.

Re: Push vs Pull inside door handles?

so I guess you need to decide - do you want to push or pull the handle to open the door. then get a door control that makes that happen. good luck

Anyone have a push-style driver's side door relay (control, remote, etc) in working condition?
