Ididit install help

I am installing an ididit tilt column in my '63 using the stock bracket but the ididit column doesn't have any mounting holes? They claim it installs using stock hardware? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Ididit install help

Yeah, it's a little misleading...you do use the lower bracket that the parking brake handle mounts to, but you'll need to secure the column with a couple of sheetmetal screws where the orginal two bolts were located. Then you have to use one of the interior firewall column mounts where it passes through the opening in the firewall. I used a stainless T-bolt clamp on the otherside of the firewall securing the column to the factory flange. I hope that helps a little.

Re: Ididit install help

I don't have any photos right now, and my truck is apart...I'm prepping the cab for paint. But, if you go to the Ididit site and the tech area, there are instructions for the Tri 5 installation, which is similar to the installation process that I used.

Re: Ididit install help

I installed an Ididit column into my 64 GMC recently but not before I sent it back to Ididit to have them update it to their latest version. The new version includes threaded nuts that slide in slots on the column allowing you to bolt it to the park brake bracket. No drilling required.

Re: Ididit install help

I had the same problem that you did, no mounting holes or nuts to mount to the stock park brake. I spoke to them at their booth at the SEMA show and they said send it back and they will update it. I did that nearly a year and a half ago. It came back with 2 slots about 3" long running the length of the column near the top where the bracket would bolt on. In behind the slot was a plate with 2 threaded holes that could slide up and down to line up with the holes in the stock bracket with the stock size bolts. They took the column back and updated it at no charge. I would give them a call. Better then drilling holes in your new column. You might also want to double check for length, I had to end up getting mine shortened a couple of inches because I swithched to rack and pinion steering and these columns were designed to work with the stock steering.
Call them, they had no problem helping me out.
I spoke to Marty Waterstraut, Ididit Sales manager, (517) 424-0577
My Part Number was 1140650010.

Re: Ididit install help

my column from ididit was one you had to drill holes to mount it but i thought it was okay because i put down as far as i could so i would have more room. it's not that big of a deal drill holes for screws and put locktite on them. its not going anywhere

Re: Ididit install help

Jhogan63 mine was not a ididit column but they all look the same. Mine cost $199.00 on EBAY shipped. Using the lower firewall mounting clamp and upper park brake lever bracket assy the column mounted solid. I did use a 5/8 rubber hose I cut out to stick in between the lower dash and top of the column to mount tight. Its not really necessary to mount screws but the vendors recommend. I bought 2 aluminum thread serts 1/4'' - 20 thread. I marked the holes and held the column in position with a bucket and 2x4. Removed the park brake lever mount and drilled the 2 holes (do not oversize the holes) push in the thread serts (make sure it goes in tight) and crimp with a special tool. I used a long 1/4 bolt with nut and tighten insert while it sqeezes tight like a rivet. It now looks like the column came with mounting bolts. Also when you drill the column tube there is about an 1" to 1 1/2" between the outer tube and inner pipe...

Used the stock lower firewall bracket clamp assy as long as the steering column tube is 2" diameter. Also ordered a new seal for the firewall cover...

Re: Ididit install help

Thanks for all the help guys. I talked to Ididit and they said they have updated the steel columns to have a slot with nuts in them but the aluminum columns don't because they are thicker and not room to do it. I'll post pictures when it's installed.

Re: Ididit install help

I've used IDIDIT and Flaming river columns in various projects. I personally wont use another IDIDIT.
The Flaming River column used in my 61 Apache build was a direct bolt up and fit very securely! Their shaft design is a much stronger and safer setup than the IDIDIT columns I have used in the past where they require you to cut your old steering shaft, grind it and use a set screw, I have seen those fail and come loose, that scares the crap out of me!
