Factory side exhaust duals

Many years ago I had an 86 GMC C10. I remember replacing the muffler and tailpipes with some from Autozone. The muffler was a single out dual out and both pipes exited on the drivers side just behind the rear tire. I am curious if this was a factory set-up or aftermarket?

Re: Factory side exhaust duals

That was factory, single exhaust with dual tailpipes exiting behind the passenger rear tire.

Re: Factory side exhaust duals

My dad had an 85 with the same setup. It had a single 2-1/2 before and dual 2-1/4 out the back on the same side

Re: Factory side exhaust duals

The passenger side seems like a better idea...kinda insulated the driver from the sound somewhat. I kinda like the look, so I might go that route when I redo my exhaust.

Re: Factory side exhaust duals

I think my 83 C20 is mostly stock on the 454 exhaust, but the tailpipes exit behind the rear wheels on both sides. I think that is a more efficient exhaust idea, but I do not have a catalytic converter to deal with (3/4 tons trucks got cat exemption for a while in the early 80s. I think the factory configuration is tailpipes over the rear axle and dumping out the back in the 83 model.

It sound like your exhaust is correct, big blocks had factory duals and no cats ( until '87 ) and exit each side behind the tires
