Restoring Vent windows - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

This is NOT a for sale thread. I have decided to start rebuilding vent windows so this is the first two sets. I just wanted to post a thread on the complete rebuild process so you guys could see what I can do. These will be in the FOR SALE section as soon as I am done with them (which I am shooting for the end of this week.) so please don't turn this into a wanted/for sale thread.

On to the windows. I started with two fairly rough worn out sets and sandblasted and powder coated everything. I did the parts that are seen in a 60% gloss black and the parts that are not seen in a satin silver to mimic the original plating and provide corrosion protection. I am lucky enough to work at a powder coating shop where the owner and I are both 67-72 enthusiasts so everything we do is top quality. When re-riveting the windows I use all the factory style rivets, I do not use pop rivets. As for the rubber and any other parts I use Classic Parts of America.

Currently I am working on a set for 68-72 and a set that are out of a 77' GMC. I am not familiar with any differences in windows from the 73-87 years however I am sure I will be soon. Again I hope to have these two sets done by the end of next week, just waiting on some more parts.

Looks good so far on what you have done. I wanted to restore my own, but ended up having Precision do mine. There's a few steps that sounded pretty difficult to do, unless you know what your doing, which I didn't. So good luck, it is really nice that you are doing a thread on the steps. Can't wait to see your finished vents!!

Looking good! If you've got a trick for installing the rubber, please share with us. If the time it took me to get it installed is any indication, I'd starve trying to rebuild these for income

Precision makes rubber for our trucks. This is the first two sets that I will be doing I just wanted to document the process for you guys. I will start a thread in the for sale section to start rebuilding wing windows.

I have a pair from a 86 that the bottom pivot (one with the spring on it) is broke. Can those be repaired.

Precision does make the seals for all the windows and such. But they also have a guy that will restore them.

Give this guy a call. He is from Precision. $175 for each window and that's for a complete restoration. Mine was only $110, I had a lot of good parts that didn't need replaced and I had already bought my seals. I had planned on doing them myself, but when I talked to this guy, is was the better route for me.

Not that it bothers me if you're trying to sell something, but sounds like a sales pitch to me. Otherwise, why mention that they're for sale?

Should be a market for the rebuilt vent windows. I'm doing the vent windows and window channels on my 87 now, and it's tedious job. Of course, the more you do, the more tricks you learn, and faster you get. Sure does look better.

Did the rubber gaskets on mine, and it was a b1tch. I used lots of dish soap and a couple different plastic putty knifes / scrapers to seat the gasket into the frame, and finally got 'er done. Don't even thing about using anything metal, like I've seen on youtube.

Paid $1200; sold for $1500 a few years later. Just a hint at the appreciation that was coming. Retired as a factory automation products salesman. Worked part-time over the years for an engine builder and a classic car repair shop. Member here for 24 years! This is the very first car/truck Internet forum I joined.
