Hello all.
Im trying to buy a 1979 K20 for my son.
BUT the one im looking at needs spring mounts and im concerned about a hole of two in frame next to mounts.

I dont mind cutting and welding, but are parts available?

Needs about 10 patch panels and am concerned w how much illhave into it afterwards. :/

U can replace every part on these trucks. But like u said, is it gonna cost more then u want. I would start by googling the truck and parts. I should see places like lmc and many others. See what u need for parts and go from there.

10 patch panels? Wow.. If you found that many areas that need work, image what you would find once you get it home. I'd pass on that rig. But thats just me.

It sounds like it would be cheaper to take a road trip to the southwest US and buy one that doesn't need so much work. Now if you want to teach your son rust repair and welding, a rust bucket would be the ticket.

I did a lot of rust repair on the truck in my signature. In my own experience, other than the cab floor, wherever I had rust through on the surface, there was also a backside panel of some sort that generally had even more rust. As an example, I had rust around the heater box on the firewall. Went to fix that and found more rust behind it in the cowl area. If you see rust in the wheel well in the battery area, then you likely also have a lot of rust in the lower part of the core support in that area.

You don't find many patch panels for the out-of-sight sheetmetal so you'll have to fabricate. Good news is nobody is likely to see your work back there so it doesn't have to look perfect. Point is like the other guy said, you'll likely find more rust when you get it home and look closer, then even more when you start cutting out the rot that you see. You'll need to figure that in when you decide how much work to put into the truck.
