Wish I could find it again!

My Dad's 1968 K20 Chevrolet 4WD
My Dad bought it in 1970 in Spirit Lake, Iowa with about 8000 miles on it. It was red w/ white cab and suicide mirrors.
292 6 Cyl
4 speed
Rockwell T221 transfer case
Eaton HO52 rear axle (FF)
No power brakes
Drum brakes on all corners
Enclosed front knuckles
Lockout front hubs
No air conditioning
No power steering
Bench seat
Padded door panels
AM radio
Manual choke
Manual throttle (I've never seen another dash with all four knobs other than a C50 or higher)
It had the "Custom" emblems on the doors
It had the white grille with a white front bumper
The wheels were the all white split-rim and sported 7.50-16 mud tires.
It came with a red and white oak livestock rack that weighed about 800 lb.
The leaf springs were the heaviest I have ever seen. there were only (3) leaves on each corner and each one was 1/2" thick. It rode like a lumber wagon, especially when it did not have the stock rack on it.

This was the first car/truck I ever drove. I was 5 years old and we were moving cattle from one farm to another. Dad pulled up to it, and told me to get in it and drive it back to the house. When I protested, he told me what to do and that it would start in gear. I didn't need to use the clutch to shift it and I'd watched him drive it. 45 minutes later, I drove into the yard a mile and a half away. I made it in 2nd gear, and had to stand up to see over the dash.

My brother got the truck in 1978 when Dad finally got a new one. My brother installed a 283 V8 and some white spoke 15" rims with BFG all-terrain tires on them.

As with most all of us, he had to sell the truck when he began his family. Not sure what happened to the truck, but as I read all the posts here, I am discovering it was some sort of "special" as I have not seen other trucks as heavy as that one. Even the 1970 K2500 GMC we recently purchased with the HD springs option does not have springs like that.

I wish I had a copy or pic of the SPID.

We MAY have some old pics of the truck, but I'm sure they are stuffed in a box someplace......

If anyone may know of this truck in the NW Iowa area, let me know. Even if you only saw it at a salvage yard.

Re: Wish I could find it again!

I can be of no help in finding the truck, but I have a question. What are suicide mirrors?

Sorry, that's what we always called them because it was like committing suicide pulling out in traffic because you always would pull out in front of someone because you couldn't see the oncoming traffic due to the mirrors.

I believe the PROPER name is West Coast mirror. They are the ones that go from the top of the door frame to the the bottom of the vent window. They cover so much opening that you can see more behind you than you can in front of you.

(I can't post pics....)

Oh, ok. I know what the west coast mirrors are, just never heard them called suicide mirrors. Good luck with your search.
