Re: very discouraged

The filter is where the fluid is picked up from the pan. If it is laying in the bottom of the pan, no fluid will be picked up and pumped through the system. The dip stick will read whatever amount is in the pan and has no barring on if the filter has fallen off the valve body. Pull the pan to find out.

Re: very discouraged

well guys here an update. I found a transmission on craigslist for 125 bucks. This guy had it in his 1970 el camino. He is changing his drive train out from basically stock 350/th350 to a 475 horse 355/ built th350. I went to his house and he let me drive the elco to see the trans shift fine, which it did. He pulled it that night and i picked it up the following morning, complete with converter. I will be installing this in my c10 in the next week.

Also, picked up a set of long tube cragar cool blue headers part number 45450 from 1978. They fit the truck absolutely perfect. This set was only 40 bucks. Anyone know anything about these headers from Cragar?

Re: very discouraged

That does NOT look like a Chevy bolt pattern bell housing on your transmission. Not sure what you have there, and not sure it will work.

Re: very discouraged

Did a quick google search, looks like you have something I didn't know existed - a "uni-case" TH350 that will fit either Chevy or Buick-Olds-Pontiac. Cool deal.

Re: very discouraged

MikeN the guy i got it from had posted his ad with no pictures, just a description. SO when i went out there and drove the car, i was sold. When i saw the trans the next morning my initial thought was, what the heck is that thing? He assured me that is was a dual pattern unicase th350. Showed me the 350 chevy that it was bolted to, which happened to be a vortec 350, like mine. Is the unicase th350 a rare piece?

Re: very discouraged

I never heard of it until I googled it. According to the link I posted above, it can be used with a lockup torque converter. If true, that is a really nice feature, although lockup converters can be a tad pricey. You can also use it with just a standard converter.

Those Cragar cool blue headers are a nice score at 40 bucks ..... those are a rare breed and they are Equal length headers which is a huge plus .. most headers that people are using in their trucks are not equal length headers if they are they have to be custom made to the truck ... equal length headers are a Racing trick header that builds better HP and TQ they also give off a distinct sound as well .... you are gonna love those headers

Re: very discouraged

Does this mean we will never know what the original problem was?

Re: very discouraged

I wouldn't feel discouraged, I just started my new motor for the first time, blew up my muffler, had no oil pressure , no reverse in my newly rebuilt powerglide and cooked the bearing in my brand new air conditioning compressor. Pulled the motor and trans and sent motor off for another rebuild, what ya gonna do, not going to fix itself.

Re: very discouraged

i feel you LT1 Burb. This truck has mostly fought me along its journey so far. Granted, I am making progress and if i take a step back for a minute, i almost have something I can drive so all is not too bad. Im excited to get this transmission in. After the trans and a few odds and ends, the next big project is cutting the long bed down to a short bed. Not looking forward to that...
