Re: Mustang II spindles on stock control arms

How is the steering linkage going to hook up, from top like factory for our trucks or bottom?

Stupid me, I just re-read your first post. I can't wait to see how it all comes out.

Re: Mustang II spindles on stock control arms

Well, the spindle and brake are on

Preliminary testing of the motion makes me think this is going to work just fine.

Things I need to do to complete the swap:
1) Massage the lower control arm a little more as the rotor still hits but only when fully turned.
2) Make another spacer for the upper ball joint (between nut and spindle), similar to the one you can see on the picture.
3) Massage the upper Ball joint to fit the upper control arm from the bottom side like my other was. The upper control arm comes in contact with the spindle before the shock is maxed, when this happens it limits upward travel.
3) Drill the hole for the tie rod so it is square.
4) Get it aligned

Re: Mustang II spindles on stock control arms

Here is how I modded the ball joint. Just shaved a bit off the rounded outside edge. It now sits in from the bottom of the control arm vs the top.

The rotor looks like it's very close to the A arm? How much material did you remove??

Re: Mustang II spindles on stock control arms

I actually took more off the LCA than needed. There was roughly a 1" lip that I removed. As you can see from the pic, I have plenty of room now.

Here is a straight on shot with no changes to the control arm. The rotor currently contacts the back side and front side at full turn. I will be taking a pinch more off to fix that.

Re: Mustang II spindles on stock control arms

Are you concerned taking that much off the end of the LCA?

In terms of weight savings wouldn't tubular control arms be lighter?

Re: Mustang II spindles on stock control arms

Of the shelf tubular arms are actually heavier.

I am not to worried about What I took off. I will keep an eye on things but the lower ball joint still had a ton of material around it.

Re: Mustang II spindles on stock control arms

Quick update. I think I am going to drill the steering portion of the spindle, weld in a sleeve then have it reemed to accept my stock tie rod.

After some time I will be going to a rack and pinion. I think this option well help me with rack selection simply do to width.

Re: Mustang II spindles on stock control arms

Those are the same front brakes as I'm running, looked at the full race but the weight rating was way too low so figured for the extra 3lbs each I'd go with more stopping power.

Re: Mustang II spindles on stock control arms

Ok, all done!!

As mentioned I used QA1 Upper and lower ball joints:
1210-101 = Standard height
Press in housing for our arms 1210-510
Ball Joint for lower MII that fits that housing is 9029-229

You can see from the pictures in this post that the lower required a space and the upper I just used a hardend washer and put a slight taper on the in side.

I decided to ream the spindle to accept part number ES409RT outer tie rod end.
My drag link uses inner tie rod ES409LT
These tie rod ends fit a 1982 Chevy pick up

Brakes are Wilwood 140-11017-D. This is the biggest disk Wilwood recommended with a 15" wheel. Keep in mind, I do limited street driving. I wanted to go with 140-10440 but Wilwood was not convinced they would fit a 15" wheel.

I had to massage the lower control arm with a cut off and flapper wheel around the ball joint so it did not hit the rotor.

I am guessing total weight savings is about 80-90lbs as I forgot to actually weigh the new complete set up before installing it.

Re: Mustang II spindles on stock control arms

I will add that I am pretty sure this will put the truck spindle center line back to near stock. Once I have my new front wheels mounted, I will put it on the ground and see how it effected ride height as I had a 2" drop spindle.

Re: Mustang II spindles on stock control arms

I've been considering mustang 2 spindles on my 67 simply because I wanted to run the 11" wilwoods inside buick finned aluminum drums.
now that I see it works i'll start gathering parts

Re: Mustang II spindles on stock control arms

Got things figured out with the mii spindle.

Went with a high misalignment rod end instead of a tire rod.
Moved the upper ball joint in 1/2"

Through rise there is additional toe in but not much.

Also still have my 7" upward of travel.

Re: Mustang II spindles on stock control arms

So many concentrate on the GO FAST,, it's refreshing to see someone with some sense looking at control and stopping. I spent years in the 9's with a single pot master cylinder and stock Chevy-II drum brakes. It took a failed parachute to wake my ass up that the other end is WAY more important than just cutting hundredths out of the 60' time.

Nice work Shaun

Re: Mustang II spindles on stock control arms

Super73 you have inspired me to do the same. As for I am on a budget and don't thousands of dollars for aftermarket stuff. Do you remember the part number for the MII spindles you used? Thanks been following your posts and giving me great knowledge.

I bought the spindles used. I am now thinking about buying a 2" drop version.
